Classic Home Run Call
Jack Brickhouse yelling “Hey Hey”
If there’s one moment I’ll always remember from Ernie’s playing career it was Jack Brickhouse calling home run number 500.
“Everybody on your feet. This is it!”
It still brings a tear to my eye.
And tonight’s news, of Ernie’s passing at 83, is bringing tears to the eyes of Cubs fans everywhere. It will be hours until Twitter slows down.
The news didn’t come as a complete surprise, since Ernie missed this year’s Cubs Convention and comments about his absence were a bit cryptic. But it’s still a bit of a shock.
I keep thinking about Ron Santo’s passing a few years ago, and his election to the Hall of Fame only after his death.
Now, Ernie is gone, just as the Cubs are on the verge of finally bringing the World Series back to Wrigley Field.
There is no joy in Mudville.
