Cubs Sign Daniel Descalso
After rumors last week, the Cubs have signed utility infielder Daniel Descalso to a two-year contract. The contract was reported to be for $5 million with an option for a third year. According to Ken Rosenthal the contract could be worth as much as $8.25 million with incentives. Option for 2021 in Descalso’s contract with... Read more »

Anarchists' Brunch: Cynicism On Display

Anarchists' Brunch: Cynicism On Display
I'm pretty happy the Miami series is over at the earliest possible point this year. Though Opening Days in Miami in the past have usually forecast doom (0-14 in neon lights), these days it's just a sign of the most cynical aspects of the sports world...

Aqua Seafoam Shame

Aqua Seafoam Shame
As a general rule, I don't pay much attention to the Cubs Convention. It's a love-fest, and that's fine as in the middle of winter the thought of baseball can at least make the brain-freeze temps seems bearable...for like a minute and a half. The news is rare, and what there is is usually some player telling us he's changed his off-season regimen and/or this is the best he's felt in a long time. And you get your first look at free agent signings in Cubs jerseys I guess, though hoping they don't plan on playing with a turtleneck under it and suit pants when the season starts. Still, a more interesting nugget than usual popped up on Saturday when Tom Ricketts had a thought, even an original one if you can believe it, regarding Sammy Sosa...

Anarchist's Brunch- Move upside and let the man go through.

Anarchist's Brunch- Move upside and let the man go through.
The Ricketts need to take a vacation. From themselves. I mean, they can be who they are and all. Todd can lead the Bike parade to Milwaukee (Is that this weekend?) Tom can hand out cards and take pictures. But they should be more owner and less employee and let some people do their jobs.... Read more »

It's too early for this #@&*….

It's too early for this #@&*….
So the Chicago Cubs Press has come into camp in the best shape of their life, promising to lose the real narrative of this Cubs season in favor of silly Cub Cliche logic and “Woe is Us” spin. And Cub fans, not the reasonable ones but the larger mass of stupidity, is gobbling it up... Read more »

Ricketts supporting Theo in managerial search and rebuild process, not influencing him

Ricketts supporting Theo in managerial search and rebuild process, not influencing him
Yesterday, I desperately hoped that the Cubs were making the Sveum decision for the right reasons.  Theo Epstein’s statement yesterday allayed many of my concerns but today Gordon Wittenmeyer wrote this, Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts and business president Crane Kenney are said to have pushed strongly for Girardi. But despite my fears yesterday, I have... Read more »

Double Take: Sveum fate to be decided on Monday

Double Take: Sveum fate to be decided on Monday
The Top 50 Prospect series will return later today but right now the manager situation and how it’s being handled is on my mind. Dale Sveum’s fate is to be decided on Monday and I have to admit I have some mixed feelings on the matter.  While the rallying cry from the media and many... Read more »

Cubs Q and A with Sun Times Gordon Wittenmyer Part 2: Ricketts, 2014, Sveum

Cubs Q and A with Sun Times Gordon Wittenmyer Part 2: Ricketts, 2014, Sveum
Yesterday we talked with Sun Times Cubs beat writer Gordon Wittenmyer. The discussion focused on the Cubs potential core players like Starlin Castro, Jeff Samardzija, and even Junior Lake. Today we talk bigger picture, an area where Wittenmyer has delved into quite a bit with his work. Here is part two. TL: Gordon, another area... Read more »

(Ricketts) Sign from Baseball Gods or just irony?

(Ricketts) Sign from Baseball Gods or just irony?
Is this irony? I think so. I stumbled upon a great photo of the Wrigley Field bleachers under original construction back in 1937. The photo is from the book “The Cubs” by Glenn Stout. It’s a great book for Cubs fans by the way (chronicling the team history from a collection of writers perspectives) and... Read more »

Will Cubs spend more money this offseason?

Will Cubs spend more money this offseason?
Most Cubs fans want the Cubs to rebuild their foundation and I am one of them, of course.   The Cubs have come a long way as far as building their farm system back up to respectability.  It’s a top 10 system by most accounts and it’s on the verge of becoming more than that.... Read more »
