After an off-day on Monday, the Yaquis were back in action on Tuesday and continued to pound the ball, using 9 hits to best Navojoa 8-2. Carlos Sepulveda was in the midst of things as the second baseman went 1-for-4 with a walk, a 2-out RBI, a stolen base, and a run scored. Cubs pitching prospect Jose Albertos appeared in the ninth inning. The right-hander allowed an unearned run as he struck out the first batter he saw, issued a walk, and uncorked a wild pitch in an inning of work. Obregon 8 – Navojoa 2

The offensive output by the Tribe over the past few games was quelled by Navojoa on Wednesday as Obregon lost 7-2. Second baseman Carlos Sepulveda was one of the few bright spots for the Yaquis as he was 1-for-3 with a run scored in the loss. Navojoa 7 – Obregon 2

Thursday saw Obregon losing more of their early-week momentum as they coughed up 2 runs to Navojoa in the ninth to lose 7-5. Carlos Sepulveda was one of the sparks for the team, as he was 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, and 2 RBI. However, an uncharacteristic error by the second baseman led to 2 unearned runs. Navojoa 7 – Obregon 5

Notes

The Venezuelan Winter League officially opened on November 4. There is no current information as to whether the MLB ban on affiliated players remains in place. Because of current sanctions in place on Venezuela by the United States, Major League Baseball banned all affiliated players from participation.

However, VWL teams do have affiliated players on their current rosters. As of this time RHP Enrique De Los Rios, who pitched for Advanced-A Myrtle Beach, Low-A South Bend, and Short Season-A Eugene in 2019, is on the roster for Leones de Caracas. Buddy Bailey, manager of the Midwest League Champion South Bend Cubs, will not be managing in Venezuela for the first time in 17 years.

Cubs RHP Jose Albertos has joined Yaquis de Obregon in the Mexican Pacific League.

Catcher Eric Gonzalez has joined Estrellas Orientales in the Dominican Winter League.

  • Thanks, Tom. Carlos Sepulveda seems to be a nice option for the Cubs up the middle if he continues to develop.

  • In reply to Cliff1969:

Thank you! Sepulveda was quite rusty last year after losing nearly two seasons to a shoulder injury. Last year was also the most games Sepulveda played in any one season ever. Sepulveda is also considered an ace defender and kind of got jobbed out of a minor league Gold Glove this past season.

  • I don't have all the rosters yet, but it looks like at least 8 Cubs prospects will participate in the Roberto Clemente League, which opens on Friday.

  • Thanks for these winter updates

    You're welcome!
