Opposing pitcher

Scouting Reports from Brooks Baseball.

Anthony DeSclafani: Anthony DeSclafani has thrown 8,501 pitches that have been tracked by the PITCHf/x system between 2014 and 2019, including pitches thrown in the MLB Regular Season, Spring Training and Fall/Winter Ball. In 2019, he has relied primarily on his Fourseam Fastball (95mph) and Slider (90mph), also mixing in a Curve (84mph) and Sinker (95mph). He also rarely throws a Change (89mph).

His fourseam fastball generates a high number of swings & misses compared to other pitchers’ fourseamers, results in somewhat more flyballs compared to other pitchers’ fourseamers and has slightly above average velo. His slider is thrown extremely hard, has much less depth than expected and results in somewhat more flyballs compared to other pitchers’ sliders. His curve is thrown extremely hard and has primarily 12-6 movement. His sinker generates a high number of swings & misses compared to other pitchers’ sinkers, has well above average velo and results in somewhat more flyballs compared to other pitchers’ sinkers. His change is thrown extremely hard and generates a very high amount of groundballs compared to other pitchers’ changeups.

Sean’s Note: Unlike his teammates, DeSclafani gets very few ground balls, just 37% of contact. Home runs have been an issue with 15 allowed in 74.1 innings pitched. His 4.70 ERA is basically the same as his 4.74 FIP, so he is not particularly lucky or unlucky. The Cubs jumped all over him at Wrigley Field in May, Kyle Schwarber, Kris Bryant, and Anthony Rizzo all took him deep.

Final Thoughts: Javy Báez gets the day off, so the bottom of the Cubs order today is not great. Jason Heyward has been red-hot of late with a homer in each of the last two games. Jon Lester has been hit or miss of late, hopefully today is a hit.

  • I wonder why Maddon would start Descalso over Bote. It can't be because he is a lefty and a righty is starting.

  • In reply to 2016 Cubs:

    Bote s playing 3rd

  • In reply to stix:

You're right I missed that. I guess Maddon had no choice to start David "Autoout" Descalso. At least Maddon can use him to pinch hit today. Tough with a 3 man bench

  • In reply to 2016 Cubs:

    Can't*

  • An example of making contact instead of striking out. Somebody might want to tell our hitters that making Anthony DeSclafani work today, on such a hot day, might just be a good idea.

  • There is no way they can be sure Ervin makes that play without the fan in the way, ridiculously bad call............

  • In reply to Treebeard:

buy you have to give Ervin an opportunity, that fan took away his opportunity. I agree with the call.

  • In reply to Squareburgers:

Yep. I hate it, but it's the rules. Once the nets are extended to the foul poles, there will be less of that stuff.

  • Real tough break for the Cubs there. I guess I understand the rule but just because the fielder got there and it was possible he'd catch it doesn't mean he was likely to catch it. That would have taken an incredible catch by Ervin. I think Alou had a better shot at his honestly.

  • Desalso watch: strikeout, popup to catcher.
If they don't replace him for the second half, he'll start getting booed, if he hasn't started hearing it already

  • In reply to DarBar15:

Agreed just release him he’s not getting hits almost whatsoever these days. He’s not even playable as a reserve at all

  • In reply to DarBar15:

He actually flied out to left his first at bat. He is actually having a great day at the plate with no strikeouts in 2 at bats.

  • In reply to 2016 Cubs:

You're right. And yes, a great day for him...

  • In reply to DarBar15:

Didn’t they sign him for 2 years.

  • In reply to WaitTilNextYear:

There's just no room for him on such a short bench

  • Boy this offense is pitiful without javy in the lineup, and this bottom of the order feels like they don’t even have a chance. Watching this lineup makes me understand why maddon refuses to give javy a day off. Just no way to sit him without hurting the cubs in some phase of the game

    In reply to kkhiavi:

Russell, Descalso, and the pitcher’s spot due up. Makes you wonder if they should just skip right to the 7th inning stretch, lol.

    In reply to John Winter:

Wow, glad I was wrong. Reverse psychology works again!

  • That ball was altered off his foot....you could see it......bad call by the ump.

  • J-Hey! Pat Hughes almost cried making that call. The dejection in his voice turning to pure elation. That was classic.

  • No reason to keep the Cadillac in the garage anymore Joe.......

  • In reply to Wickdipper:

Unfortunately the car had three flat tires . AGAIN.

  • In reply to stix:

I didn't even see it, but it sounded ugly.

  • Juuussstt a bit outside.

    Damn it!

At least we turned the order over for the 9th.

  • Just saw that Dylan Cease is scheduled to make his MLB debut in a double-header on Wednesday. Good luck to him.

  • In reply to BarleyPop:

    Cool. Hope he does well

  • How 'bout them Bears?

  • 1 for 10 with RISP. What a pathetic bunch. does any one really think this is a playoff team let alone a world series contender. Sell and rebuild.

  • In reply to TheSarge#36:

    Yes. In 1st place
And definitely NO. This is our best stretch in my lifetime. You’d have to be a Cardinals fan to want a rebuilt

  • In reply to TheSarge#36:

    I do, and we won't.

  • Well that sucked.

  • Brach, Kintzler, and Ryan didn't pitch yesterday, but Maples had; why bring Maples in after pitching yesterday, was he trying to see how he did in a back to back? Definitely backfired there, could've brought Ryan in to start the inning, or Brach or Kintzler; if you're saving people for a possible extra innings affair, at least focus on getting there first............

  • In reply to Treebeard:

If Ryan gets anyone out instead of allowing 3 runners to score, different result. Ryan needs to get the PH out and didn’t Maples was as good as you expect. Ryan nor Monty are LOOGY types need a LH that fits that profile.

  • In reply to stix:

Easy to look at in hindsight, I know; just didn't like the move at the time.......maybe Hultzen, Cedeno,
or Rosario can be the LH?
Rosario is already on the 40 man.......
