Update From John

Note: John is unable to access ChicagoNow but wanted to personally update everyone.

Hello all,
I just wanted to say thank you for all the kind words and all the well-wishes.  I can read everything, but I just have limited access and am unable to respond.
I am currently in the hospital and have been here since Thursday morning.  I have a staph infection in my elbow and I am being treated with heavy duty antibiotics.  I am feeling better and the elbow has shrunk to it’s normal size and shape, but my white blood cell count remains high — and so I am still stuck here until they find out exactly why.
It is especially hard that I can’t share this great time in Cubs baseball with all of you, though I assure you that I am watching every game and going nuts over this team.  With all the impromptu fist pumps, I think I have probably set the record for triggering the IV alarm.
Just know that I am getting better and I will be around soon and through the stretch run of this great season.  I will make up for the missing recaps (how about Javy Baez and Eloy Jimenez lately?) with lots of original prospect stuff this offseason.
See you all soon and go Cubs!

  • In reply to North Side Irish:

    pun intended? lol

  • Get better soon John! We're all pulling for you as much as the Cubs! Fortunately for us, you didn't just make a blog, you made a community. That, and some other great writers, keep it all going. Go Cubbies!

  • In reply to hawkmcd:

    Amen!

    In reply to hawkmcd:

I second this. Great writers stepping up. Great readers and comments. Going to take a lot more than a 15 day DL stint to slow this cubs team (and website) down.

  • Godspeed with your recovery John! You're missed.

  • fb_avatar

Well thank god your okay and getting better. Staph infection ? Wow, I did not expect that last week, but the longer it went, I started to get a bad feeling that it was something more severe.

Here's hoping you get out of the hospital while the Cubs are still on a winning streak !!

  • Get well soon John...we miss you!

  • Hope you have a fast recovery. You have been missed - BIG TIME!

  • Hear, hear -- speedy recovery, John!

  • Bad case of "typing elbow", eh? Get well soon. You are missed!

  • Get well soon. Hope you are catching the Cubs games somewhere.

  • Get well soon, John...!

John, it's so good to hear your voice after so long. I'm very happy that you're slowly recovering, although for your BP you might want to watch the 9th inning tonight.
Not that I'm superstitious but since you've been Ill the Cubs have hardly lost. But I still want you back asap,

    In reply to Jonathan Friedman:

This one came through first so I'm assuming this is the one you wanted kept.

    In reply to Mike Moody:

thanks Mike, and thanks for all you've done while John is down. We all appreciate it.

    In reply to Jonathan Friedman:

Thanks. Wish I could do more but the timing is miserable for me. I know Dan/NSI is in the same boat. Thankfully the Cubs are providing entertainment this year. This would have been a really bleak stretch the last 3 years.

    In reply to Jonathan Friedman:

    exactly, Thank You again Mike.

  • Get Well John!

  • fb_avatar

    Get well soon John!!

  • Get well soon, John -- praying for a quick and full recovery!

  • Get well John!!
    Speedy recovery to you!

  • Hope it's not your throwing arm John , after tonight's bullpen show I think we could use a couple more healthy elbows. In all seriousness I wish you a speedy recovery and a quick return home to the friendly confines of your own bed and comfy recliner.
Also great job being done by Mike and North Side Irish while you recup.

  • Good to hear the update from you, John. And here's to a quick recovery. It sounds like we should have you off the DL well before Soler. Great start to the road trip!

  • fb_avatar

John, My Family is praying for your speedy and complete recovery. We all you miss you.

  • fb_avatar

GOD BLESS AND HERE'S PRAYING FOR A SPEEDY RECOVERY JOHN!

  • fb_avatar

Glad to hear you turned the corner and are regaining your health. You have good solid contributors, but no one can take your place. It's not same without you. good luck and fortune to your full recovery.

  • Motte, Soler and John! Jiminee creepers, good thing we got a strong bench. Get well soon John, and keep up the good work Mike!

  • Best time right now to be on the DL John, come back strong for the stretch run!

  • John - best wishes for a speedy recovery from Kuwait... Thank you for the enjoyment you guys be us every day with your wise and considered words.

Make sure you get your rest while you can - I had a similar infection causing cellulitis in my leg last year and I was still feeling tired from effects over 6 months later.

On a positive sign let's rejoice in the Cubs - if you are superstitious, I'm sure you would have gladly moved from Chicago to AZ and had a staph infection 10 years ago had it been for the good of the team.

  • In reply to Hustlelikereed:

    ** enjoyment you give us

    Get well soon, John!

  • The way I see it, we are learning about perspective here - in the context of life and health of those we care about, even World Series titles are little more than trappings. We can hold all of these things with an open hand, realizing that there is something in all life that carries things more important than wins or losses, or clicks on a website. The Cubs will still be here when you get back, John, and so will we. Take care of yourself, and we wish you a speedy recovery.

  • Get well soon. Don't rush. take your time to fully recuperate. We'll still be here.

  • Get well soon John.

  • fb_avatar

    Get well soon, John.

  • Just make sure they dont try to check your blood pressure during or for several hours after games...they might try to keep you in there longer. Get well soon!

  • Get well soon john you are missed.

  • Thoughts and prayers from my family to you. Here's to a speedy recovery.

  • I've heard winning is the best medicine.

  • fb_avatar

With all due respect to the people filling in for you John, it's just not the same. Get well soon. I look forward to meeting you at some game in Mesa.

  • Get well soon!

  • John, take care of yourself, get well soon, and go Cubs!

  • Take care of yourself and feel better, that's the most important thing. I think Starlin found out you were sick before the game and decided to put on a show for you since you've always been one of his most ardent defenders.

  • Sorry to hear about your hospital stay, and only hope it's not your pitching arm. Those elbows can be tricky.

Get well and rest up; we're going to need you for both the pen and the Den. It's going to be an interesting finale to the season.

  • John - get well soon and know that all of us out in the boonies appreciate all your hard work to keep us up to date on our favorite ball club. Go Cubs!

  • Best wishes John for a full and expeditious recovery! Cub Nation needs you back!!

  • fb_avatar

If it's truly in the elbow joint that's 6 weeks of IV antibiotics -that's unacceptable for us John, amputation is quicker ;)

    Good luck, man.

  • Good luck and get well. We all miss you around here.

  • God be with you John,

    get well soon,

  • Get well soon boss.

  • Take care John and get well for the stretch run and playoffs. In the mean time, just chat it up with the nurses about all the young talent in Arizona. I am sure they would love to hear about it.

  • Best wishes on a speedy recovery John! Really do miss your daily updates. I knew I had a Cubs Den habit, but I'm really Jonesing for some Arguello writing on anything Cubs-related! Mabye going to have to start rummaging through the Cubs Den Archives!

  • Hang in there buddy. Tough times don't last but tough people do. You're one of the good guys. Better times ahead.

  • Get well John! I've been having withdrawals without your articles comin every day!

  • Get well soon John! I've spent two long stretches in the hospital this summer and it's no damned fun. Feel better and hope to see back at the wheel soon!

  • Good to hear from you at least! I was getting really worried! Get well soon! Great comment earlier about perspective though!

  • We all miss you John, but most importantly, I hope you get well soon. You're a solid, awesome human being and are very important to us. So get well soon, and I hope you get back to what you love doing much sooner than later my friend.

  • Get well soon!

  • Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

  • John, Get well soon and hang in there. Enjoying the the ride with you and the other denziens. ! It's been worth the wait. Onward!

  • hang in there John, it does get better from experience.

It's odd however - you get hospitalized and Castro nearly hits for the cycle!

We will need to explore that further when you get released!! :-)

  • John, I hope that you get back to 100% health very soon!

  • At least there was no tommy john required.
Just kidding, get well soon, we miss you.

  • Get well soon!

  • God's Speed!

  • John, I know it's sickening that the Cubs won't get a top 10 draft pick but isn't this taking things a bit far? Seriously get well soon!

  • Sorry you're in the hospital, but glad things are on the mend. Look forward to having you back! CMC

  • Get well John, go cubs go

  • Praying for a quick recovery for you, John! Look forward to seeing you active on Twitter and Cubs Den again soon!

  • Get well soon John! Your insights, analysis, and humor are very much missed!

  • Get well soon, John! Prayers going up for you bud.

  • Get well soon, John!

  • Get well soon, John!
I didn't know you were on the DL.
We need you back in time for roster expansions. Maddon can use your speed and baseball smarts to pinch run, at the very least. Not so sure about needing Bonifacio back after being tainted by the south side so recently.

  • Get well soon, John! Don't want you to miss all the fun!

  • fb_avatar

Get well John, You are needed.. No time to slack :)

  • Allow me to be a little 'hokie'. I can get away with it because I'm as old as dust. You are a friend to all on this site. Thanks for all that you do. Be well!

  • I just got out of the hospital last week with a staph infection in my leg. One leg was double the size of the other one due to swelling. I feel your pain! Get well soon.

  • Get better pal.

  • fb_avatar

The 'ole elbow taking revenge on you for all those long nights at the desk. Eh?

Get well, John. Take your time. This amazing staff you built will keep the hype train moving till your return.

  • Get well soon!

  • fb_avatar

Jesus, John. This is baseball blogging. Major League Baseball blogging. And you're gonna lay there and tell me your elbow hurts???

Rub some dirt on it and get back out there, fer Chissakes...

  • fb_avatar

    Get well soon, John!

  • Get well soon my brother!
    We all miss your work.

  • Staph infections are nothing to ignore,.... way too many antibiotic resistant types floating about nowadays.

Relax as much as you can John - rest up & save your energy for getting healthy - and let the professionals work their magic. And in the meantime - GO CUBS!

  • I told you to stop hanging around the Tampa Bay Bucs locker rooms. We don't care about no football!

Get better soon. This might get to be real good...

  • My best to you John. Feel better. I hope you get to start pumping your fist in your own home very soon.

  • Family and Health are #1 priorities in life. Take time and get better. Best wishes and prayers to you John.

  • What a trial! Glad there's a clear path for care.
"Well sure I made it, but you know,
It was a hell of a trip." -John Prine

  • It's not the same without you John. Hope you get better soon man!

  • Get well soon John! Celebrating the Cubs World Series win this year will not be the same without you and this blog being part of it.

  • Get well soon. From the picture it appears you are in capable hands.

  • Get well soon John .... Really miss your updates, but at least now you have answers about why you were not feeling so well…
If you keep doing this pumps from the Cubs playing so well… Your elbow will never heal correctly… But hey, you don't need that elbow until November correct...?

  • Get well soon, John. Best news is, the doctors in the Phoenix area are some of the best around. Get well soon.

  • In reply to mutant beast:

    Thanks MB and everyone else.

I still can't post articles here, but I managed to get into the comments at least. I've read them all and they are making me feel better -- you guys are the best.

  • In reply to John Arguello:

Good to hear from you. Keep the spirits up.

  • In reply to John Arguello:

Figured I might as well give this a try...

  • In reply to John Arguello:

hehe, good luck. Those whiteboards are just placebos for the patients, staff never looks at them.

  • In reply to Oneear:

They haven't noticed it yet. Maybe I will ask (subtly, of course), "Hey Nurse, what's the plan for today?"

  • In reply to John Arguello:

It is good to see you still have your sense of humor. Rest up while you have the chance because the next month or two you are going to have to celebrate many Cub wins.

  • In reply to John Arguello:

I bet one of th AZ denizens would be willing to risk a little bootlegging.

  • In reply to John Arguello:

Excellent addition to the white board! I hope it works for you.
    Feel better soon!

  • Hope you feel better soon, John. Wish you a speedy recovery!

  • Best Wishes for a speedy recovery John.

  • A suggestion to ease the pressure on Mike and you, John. Ask some of your regular commentators to send in their version of an article for the Den. You can go over it at your leisure, John, then post the ones you'd like posted with credit to the commentators. I think there are several that could possibly do one - maybe Cop in Blue, maybe some others. You'd have control over what's posted and it would take the pressure off of having to meet a deadline. Don't know if this is feasible. Just a suggestion.

  • In reply to pricewriter:

Thanks. I am willing to do this if Mike and others can help me sort through them.

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to John Arguello:

I'm swamped but if we're not talking a killer time commitment I'd be happy to help. Can certainly post and such.

  • In reply to Mike Moody:

I think the crunch might be in the very beginning then it should ease off and all you do is say when the guest articles run and see to their posting. Have a central area to send the articles to. Someone could sort them, forward them on to John for his initial reaction. Then do a calendar for their appearance, proof them, and then it should run with our much hitch.

  • In reply to pricewriter:

I'd be happy to take a stab at contributing, if needed and appropriate.

  • In reply to djbk:

Great. John and Mike are the final judges. They know the ropes. John and Mike, djbk is willing and I think others will volunteer as needed. Again, you call the shots.

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to pricewriter:

    Mike or John,
If no one has posted anything about the minor league scores I could do that some time tomorrow. I could just list the scores and who did well, but that might take some of the pressure off.

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to Jonathan Friedman:

I am certainly not going to have time with classes starting and September first getting terrifyingly close, so I'm good with it. John's call, obviously.

  • In reply to Mike Moody:

Time for me to step out of the picture. John and Mike know what will work and won't work. They are the ones to decide. Hope all works out and you get well soon, John. Mike, you have a heavy program ahead of you. Good luck.

  • Get Well Soon John ...you are missed !!

  • John:

Get out of there soon! Hospital stays have the highest mortality rates of any institutions even prisons.

I miss your insights, but here is one for you, rookie home run rates per AB, Schwarber still is below 12 AB's per HR, only McGwire had that average, though it was for a full year, but still it is better than Dunn, Berger, Frank Robinson or ARod.

    This is becoming historic.

  • John, get well soon, bro. We take for granted this great blog while reading the articles & comments & sometimes forget about life & the humans behind the words. Wishing a speedy recovery to you from this point forward. Thanks for everything you & the guys do to keep this site going.

  • Rest up and get well, John! Thanks to the other writers for helping to keep the ship on course.

  • John get well soon. I hope it wasn't your pitching elbow.

    Get well soon brother!!

    Get Well Soon

  • fb_avatar

I had a staph infection once not too long ago but mine was inside my body and took like 2 years to really truly recovery from, even though they give you anti biotics and what not the staph really can adapt and mutate quickly, and so you need to really be vigilant even if you feel better when you do go home watch for the signs and don't wait a second longer to call a doctor even if you feel the slightest of symptoms because it can get out of control quickly, but stay on top of eating and drinking too and give your body what it needs to fight, most important and overlooked but stay positive no matter what... Good luck and I hope you feel better soon and if you need any help message me or something because I had no idea what happened to me it just spiraled out of control really quickly, yours should be OK because it isn't inside you, but it's certainly no small thing, and getting answers from a doctor is like hitting a curve ball from Clayton Kershaw lol

  • We all miss you John, get well soon before the chores list gets too long!

  • fb_avatar

A sting on the 15 day DL isn't the end of the world. You will come back in Sept and dominate the stretch run. Get better and take care of yourself.

  • fb_avatar

Get well John, your the best Cubs blogger out there! Jesse Rogers has nothing on you, I don't know why Theo hasn't hired you actually. You could really sell some Cubs readings, anyways get better!
