Step Off, Kris Bryant Haters

Step Off, Kris Bryant Haters

“You suck!” “What a bust!” “Send him back to the minors!”

There was a lot of snarking about Kris Bryant’s long-awaited Major League debut with the Cubs today, especially over the fact that he went 0-4. Expectations were set sky high for the 23-year-old baseball sensation and his eagerness to swing the bat didn’t set well with many baseball fans, causing many to call out Bryant on his debut struggles.

In a stadium packed with people screaming for you each time you’re up to bat, knowing all of baseball is focused on you right now, (with the exception of the five people watching the White Sox/Tigers game) expecting you to put on the show of a lifetime while facing one of the best pitchers in all of baseball for your big league debut? That’s just a little bit of pressure for the kid. Most people would be on the verge of a panic attack with the weight that Bryant carried on his shoulders, yet he always had a bit of a smile tugging at his lips as he took in the moment he had been waiting for: his time to be a Cub.

So lay off the poor guy (I’m talking to all the hecklers out there yelling and tweeting “you suck!” at the kid). He’s young and going through a major transition right now with the entire country watching with high expectations. A game, especially his major league debut, where he goes 0-4 certainly does not mean he “sucks” or qualifies him to be sent back to Iowa. Give him a few games to settle into his new surroundings and get used to the fact that he’s finally a big leaguer living his dream.

And to those who laughed at Bryant’s struggles today, just wait until he finds his rhythm. Somehow I don’t think it will be too funny when our “joke” of a third baseman is hitting home runs off every National League pitcher.
