My fellow runners, fellow marathoners and soon to be new marathoners…learn from my lesson.
I’m klutzy. I try to be careful, I swear. But it doesn’t always work out for the best. Sometimes I’m rushing, other times I just lose a slap fight with gravity.Like the time in high school where a group of us were playing a late night game of tag in a parking lot…and I tripped on a speed bump. It’s a gift really.
My latest accident happened Sunday, the day before my long run. Pam was working and I was home with the girls. We had chores to do…including laundry. The building we live is allows us 2 days to do laundry for free. While we live on the 2nd floor, the laundry room is in the basement.
On my way down with a load of our running gear to wash, I admit I was only half paying attention. I missed a step and as I fell I tossed the laundry basket (an screamed like Nathan Lane in The Birdcage). My legs went into the air, I twisted and landed squarely on my right leg, my hip specifically.
I laid there for a minute semi-panicking, trying to make sure I was OK. It scared the crap out of me and holy hell, it hurt.
I wasn’t injured, I just hurt. My back and my hip were sore the rest of the day. I woke up for my long run yesterday still sore but I was determined to get the miles in and I did. Sure I struggled a bit at the end, but that happens. I got lucky.
My advice to you…be careful. Err on the side of caution and do your best to not get hurt. We’re 33 days away from the Bank of America Chicago Marathon and I’m thinking I should invest in cases of bubble wrap and make myself a suit. OK, maybe that’s a bit extreme.
