My thoughts on the Lifetime Chicago Triathlon: Sprint Triathlon relay

Sunday morning marks my entry, OK, toe dip into triathlon. I will be running the 5K as a part of a relay team comprised of myself, Phil Castello (Going the Distance) and Dave Wallach (Pace of Chicago). We’ve tossed around a couple of team names and I think we’re going with the ChicagoNow (I don’t know if we can use the term ChicagoNow even though all three of us do, in fact, blog for ChicagoNow. So to be safe we won’t use it officially) Fast Action Response Team…yep, juvenile. I don’t think we’d have it any other way. Phil will tackle the swim, Dave will pound the pavement on the bike and I’m the anchor.

I’m heading to the expo this afternoon to pick up my packet and snap some pics of the event. I’ve been told the expo is like Christmas for triathletes, which got me interested. I mean who doesn’t like short people dressed like elves and sitting on a fat guy’s lap? Right, no one!

As for the race, I’m excited and a little anxious too. Not because of the distance. More because it’s new. I only know one sport. How does the relay work? Do we tag in, wrestling style and climb through the ropes to annihilate our opponents? Do we tag in or can we fist bump for our exchange? Or is there a baton we hand off? Secret handshake? Or is it a timing chip thing? See, now that I’ve wondered, I really am hoping for a wrestling like tag-in!

I’m also antsy because of the schedule change with training. Yes, Coach Jen and I talked…we’re using this as a step back week.I think it’s more because I’m a bit clueless about race morning. Yes, it’s going to be fun, but I dwell on details. I love structure and schedules…I obsess sometimes, sure. Now being one of those times. I feel like I’m flying by the seat of my pants. At this point, I don’t know what time I need to be there, where to meet and hoping I run fast enough to avoid a shaming.

I should go for a walk,  take some deep breaths and calm the hell down. I’m going to do that now…be right back…

(Post intermission)

Whew, alright I feel better. Miss me? No? Well then, moving on…

It’s just running. I’m going to enjoy Sunday, it’s definitely going to be a lot of fun. Sure I don’t have a set schedule, it’ll be fine. And honestly I don’t care about a potential shaming. My goal is to try to duplicate my personal 5K I ran a couple of weeks ago in the rain. I’ll give my best effort and we’ll see how it goes.

At any rate, I’m going to enjoy my “toe dip” into triathlon and being a part of the Fast Action Response Team! I’ll share pics of the expo at some point this weekend and of race day!

More later!
