Video: 1977 L crash in Loop killed 11 people 39 years ago today

Probably the worst day in CTA history was 39 years today when a Lake Dan Ryan slammed into the back of a Ravenswood train at the Lake-Wabash curve, killing 11 people and injuring more than 180.

See this ABC News special report video on the accident.

  • What a Throwback for today. Memories still haunt me. Top end of 2nd dangling car.

  • In reply to CarolynA2:

Yes. And at the time CTA represented that the new cab signal system would prevent incidents like this. 39 years later, we know better. Still have not explained why red does not mean stop and stay stopped.

  • In reply to jack:

Because they had that idiotic "Flasher 15" operation, which allowed full manual operation under 15 MPH.
Plus of course a motorman that was most likely stoned on pot, who kept his controller in notch 2 or 3 after he hit the stopped train, which probably sent at least one car to the ground.

I still remember the headline of Royko's column the next day. It was a quote from a woman who was with her mother & her mother died. She said "How can I go home, my mother just died"

  • In reply to ScooterLibbby:

You didn't explain "why they had that idiotic 'Flasher 15'."
