Dump the Pump! Take public transit to Hawks parade, rally

Thursday is the annual National Dump the Pump Day, when people are encouraged to take public transit instead of driving to save money on gas, reduce traffic congestion and lower carbon emissions.

And with the Blackhawks parade and rally starting at 10 a.m. Thursday, you have all the more reason to Dump the Pump. Avoid the crowded roadways and take CTA to the Loop.

Also, the RTA wants first time and veteran transit riders to log onto the RTA’s Facebook page, click the tab “#dumpthepump”, pledge to Dump the Pump and be automatically entered for a chance to win prizes.

Finally, the CTA is providing extra service for the Hawks rally. Read more on that.

  • Besides the CTA, you can stay home and enjoy the parade on TV with a beverage of your choice!

  • Based on the number of fans on the 'L' this morning, and the number streaming out of LaSalle St Station, I'd say they got the message loud and clear. One of my coworkers rides the Rock Island line's early bird train, and he said it was packed. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and they'll stay dry. 'Nothing worse than a grumpy, wet Hawk's fan.

  • In reply to SpinyNorman:

People are sure complaining that Metra trains, which apparently got packed near the beginning of the trip, aren't making stops. Apparently mostly on BNSF and UP.

  • In reply to jack:

A heard that 2 trains on the Rock were canceled, which didn't help things any.

  • I took a walk in the Loop at lunch time, and the traffic was a nightmare. They had Clark, LaSalle, Wells, and Franklin closed, and were directing traffic east/west. It was complete gridlock. Anybody who decided to drive downtown was crazy.

  • In reply to SpinyNorman:

As ApresSki indicates, anyone downtown who didn't have to be there was crazy. I was able to see C.J. Reif Jr. on my HDTV. However, I didn't need the barrage of hashtags at the bottom.
