Repost: Special CTA excursion tour to feature 2400-series cars

(I’m reposting this from last month because tickets are still available for Sunday’s tour.)

This year’s Snowflake Special Excursion tour of almost every CTA rail line will feature the 2400-series rail cars, scheduled to be replaced by the Series 5000 rail cars. The tour, sponsored by the Illinois Railway Museum, kicks off at 8:45 am on Sunday, March 25, from Harlem/Lake (Green Line) station, at Harlem Ave. and Circle Ave. in Forest Park/Oak Park.

The event will be a fund-raiser to preserve a pair 2400-series rail cars, like those pictured here. This is a popular tour that sells out every year, so rail geeks are urged to buy tickets now.

Participants will gather in the passageway under tracks near Marion auxiliary entrance at east end of station. Free parking on Sundays is available in commuter lots at Harlem and South Blvd. (enter from South Blvd.) and north of the station on North Blvd. between Harlem and Marion. Riders may also board at Harlem inbound at approximately 9 a.m., at UIC-Halsted Blue Line station at approximately 9:40 a.m., or at Clark/Lake Blue Line (subway) station at approximately 9:55 a.m. To board train at either of these alternate stations, hold up ticket in plain view of motorman and excursion crew.

Tickets are $42 apiece. The tour includes almost all rail lines plus lots of non-revenue and yard trackage. The trip will conclude at about 5:40 p.m. at Harlem/Lake.

  • Only six days to go and unlike last year we still have about two dozen tickets for the all-day "L" charter sponsored by Illinois Railway Museum. Order on the IRM website and pick up your tickets Sunday, Mar. 25, at the Harlem/Lake Green line station between 8 and 8:30am. Be sure you receive an e-mail response when you order.
