As the headline states, today was a sad day for hockey in Rockford. The first reason is the fact that the IceHogs only put up one goal, scored by Jeff Taffe. The goal was the first of the game and put the IceHogs ahead 1-0. However as the game went on the Hogs were unable to execute their opportunities and the Hogs fell to the Aeros 4-1.
The positive here, is that Taffe is on a 5 game point streak.
The second reason for the sad day, at least for me, was the trading of IceHogs’ Hugh Jessiman. Jessiman along with Jack Skille and David Pacan were traded to the Florida Panthers for forward Michael Frolik and goaltender Alexander Salak.
I knew something was wrong when a last minute change was made to take Jessiman out of the lineup.
While the trade will benefit the Blackhawks, the IceHogs are loosing a leader on and off the Ice as well as a fan favorite.
Jessiman, who was drafted in the first round of the 2003 NHL entry-level draft by the New York Rangers, has shown nothing but commitment to the game of hockey. This season alone, he had to overcome two injuries, groin and broken foot.
Jessiman scored his AHL 100th career goal this season and this trade could be a fresh start for him, injury free, on a new team. Hopefully, he could get sometime in the show with this new organization.
Like stated previously, Jessiman is a leader on and off the ice. The huge beauty (see previously blog for definition) was always a big help when the team participated in charity events. Jessiman tore up the IceHogs’ charity Bowl -A -Thon and the fans he was paired with never had a dull moment.
Jessiman also was great with the kids at the youth hockey events, willingly signing autographs and working on drills with them.
Huge Specimen, you’re a huge beauty, best of luck to you, we’ll miss you in Rockford!
