Haunted House Review: Statesville Haunted Prison

Haunted House Review: Statesville Haunted Prison

Halloween may be over, but the spirit never ends! Since Da Count and I were not ready to let go, we decided to visit one last haunt for posterity. Oh and visit we did, cause we just happened to hit up the biggest and the baddest of them all – Statesville Haunted Prison & City of the Dead!

We got there on a Sunday evening right after Halloween and it was still quite busy, but the wait looked to be less than an hour. The wait entertainment was very good, a flame twirler entranced passersby and random zombies and evil clowns terrorized the mostly college age crowd.

The unique thing about Statesville is patron interaction is extremely HIGH. You are treated like a prisoner, the guards are rough and show no mercy. General admission folks get herded into an additional entrance cage before entering the main haunt where they are packed like sardines and get more assaults from the guards and assorted other characters. We had VIP entry so we were able to skip that part and go directly to the haunt entrance, in a dark chamber where we were squeezed as tight as possible. The prison experience continues as everyone is shoved into another room where a big scary guard screamed at all of us to get in and was not shy about pointing out folks in the crowd to try and embarrass them. I even got to scream in his microphone haha. Then another guard with a LIVE rat on his shoulder escorts you into the main prison area.

This haunt is extreme with a capital EXTREME. You get shoved from room to room and are assaulted from all angles by the inmates. We had to walk through a filthy shower and encountered a nearly naked guy who wisely agreed with my comment not to drop the soap.

After the fun with psychos and clowns and dominatrixes, we finally got to exit, it felt good to escape! But the fun isn’t over, mwahaha…because next up is City of the Dead. This attraction is more of a traditional haunt, but still extreme. Zombies and crazy guides lead us inside and even joked a bit with the patrons. From catacombs to jungles we were assaulted left and right by the most unsavory creatures of the night. We left scared and exhilarated.

This was just about one of the best haunts we encountered this year, and believe me we went to plenty. Count and I give Statesville Haunted Prison and City of the Dead a big ***THREE FANGS UP***
