What's Happening This Week in Space: April 18th, 2022

Astronauts launching to space and returning to Earth, two local astronomy days, and an online Earth Day celebration with NASA are all happening this week in space. And, as the weather warms up, more opportunities to get outside and view the night sky are here.

Axiom-1 Return from Space Station, April 19th, 9:00 pm CT – April 20th, 2:24 pm CT

The crew of Axiom-1 is ready to return to Earth and weather permitting the crew will undock from the station on Tuesday evening with splashdown happening Wednesday afternoon. Coverage of events is available on AxiomSpace.com.

Adler at Night, Adler Planetarium, Wednesday, April 20th, 4-10 pm CT

In case you missed it, the Adler reopened early last month! Even better, every Wednesday night, the Adler has late hours for their new Adler at Night experience. The best part, Illinois residents get free entry to the planetarium! More information here: Adler at Night

MSI Free Day, Museum of Science and Industry, Thursday, April 21st, 9-5 pm CT

Earth Day, Friday, April 22nd

Celebrate Earth Day with NASA! NASA is hosting an online Earth Day event that spans the entire weekend. Conversations with scientists, live talks with agency engineers and program managers, access to educational activities, and a #NASAEarthling social media campaign. CIERA Astronomy Night Out, Lutkin Hall NU Campus, Evanston, Friday, April 22nd, 7-9 pm CT

Join Northwestern University for their inaugural astronomy night. The event includes a lecture by CIERA astronomer, Dr. Emily Leiner, the opportunity to meet university astronomers, telescope viewing, and astronomy activities. More information here: CIERA event

Crew-4 Launch to Station, Saturday, April 23rd, 4:26 am CT

The launch of the Crew-4 mission to the International Space Station is scheduled for early Saturday morning at 4:26 a.m. Chicago time. The launch will take four crew members- Kjell Lindgren, Jessica Watkins, Samantha Cristoforetti, and Robert Hines- to the station.

NSA Astronomy Day, Harper College, Saturday, April 23rd, 5:30-9:30 pm CT

The Northwest Suburban Astronomers club is hosting an astronomy day for the public at Harper College in Palatine. Telescope observing, astronomy activities, NASA mission updates and astronomy chats, and exhibits are all scheduled on this exciting day. More information here: NSA Astronomy Day
