What's Happening This Week in Space: April 29th, 2019

Explore space science in Chicago this week at special museum events and a rocket launch to the Space Station. Don’t miss out on a free day at the Field, or a special night of science at one of Illinois’ Challenger Learning Centers.

This is what’s happening in space this week!

NEW! Blue Origin Launch, Thursday, May 2nd, 8:30 a.m. CDT

Blue Origin and NASA just announced a launch for Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket happening tomorrow! The Blue Origin launch will be webcast live on NASA Television and the agency’s website. The launch window opens at 8:30 am. so make sure you tune in about a half hour earlier for launch coverage information. 

[UPDATE]SpaceX CRS-17 Cargo Mission, Friday, May 3rd, 1:30 a.m.

SpaceX and NASA are launching a cargo mission to the International Space Station first thing in the morning. Following a launch delay due to power issues on Space Station, the new launch time is scheduled for 2:11, but coverage begins on NASA TV around 1:30 a.m. CDT. Watch here: NASA TV

Free Admission Day, Field Museum, Thursday, May 2nd, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

The Field Museum is free for Illinois residents this Thursday! Only basic admission is included, but that ticket includes the vast majority of the museum including the meteorite collection. More info here: Field Museum

Member’s Night at the Adler, Adler Planetarium, Friday, May 3rd, 6-10 p.m.

Members of the Adler Planetarium can enjoy a special night of fun and science at the Adler. Members nights are a great way to see behind the scenes happenings at the museum, learn about current work being done by the resident astronomers, and future exhibits coming to the Planetarium! May Family Science Night, Challenger Learning Center, Woodstock, IL, Friday, May 3rd, 6-8 p.m.

Join the Challenger Learning Center for Science and Technology to explore our place in space! Hands on science stations and a digital starlab presentation await families with children in grades 1 and up. Registration is required, more info here: Challenger Center

Switch on Summer, Buckingham Fountain in Grant Park, Sunday, May 5th, 12-3 p.m.

Join the City of Chicago, ComEd, and Adler Planetarium in celebrating the start of summer. The annual Switch on Summer event at Buckingham Fountain is a free event with live music and activities- including space and science fun brought to you by the Adler! More info here: City of Chicago event
