The Stark Beauty Of Chicago's Changeable Skies

If you’ve been acquainted with my Cooler on the Lake Shore blog for a while, you know that I’m a hopeless lifelong weather junkie. And the panaromic view from the lakeside apartment to which we moved last year provides perspective on Chicago’s ever-changeable weather that never could have imagined. To wit, this morning, the forecast... Read more »

Beethoven In Millenium Park: Location, Location, Location

If you love great music, then you could listen to an orchestra perform Beethoven in a small, dark basement room and still come away inspired. But on Saturday, a beautiful night that itself was sweet relief from this summer’s record heat, I had the pleasure of sitting on the lawn of Millenium Park’s Frank Gehry-designed... Read more »

Safe Harbor For A Chicago Rainbow

We had a brief sun shower late this afternoon, and on cue, there was a rainbow over Belmont Harbor. Right outside my window. I love this place.

Just A Few More Fireworks Pix To Start The Weekend

Sorry that the story flow has been down a bit this week… just bouncing off a few more walls than usual. Like nature, I hate a vacuum, so here’s a bit of filler from one of my favorite memes… photos of Wednesday’s Navy Pier fireworks, taken from my perch about four miles north on the... Read more »

Chicago And Lake Lightning: Thor Was In A Bad Mood Tonight

Incredible lightning tonight, over the Chicago skyline and far over Lake Michigan. I’m going to step back and get out of the way of these photos…. [Note: The first three photos are of a second storm that moved through, and were added to the original post.]

Lightning Over Wrigley: The Atmosphere Was Electric

The Lake Shore View: Lake Michigan's Natural 'Fountains' - Plus Ducklings!

First, I want to give a shout-out to all the folks who have been showing the love for the photos I’ve been posting on this blog. I love taking pictures, and we are blessed both with an astounding view from our apartment and, with Lake Michigan just yards away, some of the most beautiful scenery... Read more »

Navy Pier Fireworks: Happy 7th of July

I grasp the limitation of shooting a fireworks display four miles away through fairly thick window glass. I promise that one of these Wednesdays or Saturdays I will get off my duff and take my camera and tripod down to a strategic spot along the lake and see what happens. In the meantime, I think... Fun At The Farmers' Market: Yo, It's The Italian Scallion

Shopping at farmers’ market is a total kid-in-a-candy-store experience for me. It’s fortunate that there is only so much I can carry home, because otherwise I might need a second fridge. Here is a sampling from today’s haul at Chicago’s Green City Market… There are raspberries, blueberries, sweet cherries, apricots and peaches; sweet corn, red... Read more »

Fireworks At Chicago's Belmont Harbor: Not So Big But Very Close

We got home from friends right at the end of the Navy Pier fireworks, but just in time for the show at Belmont Harbor, right outside our windows. Not nearly as big, natch, but very, very close can be cool, too.
