When you live in a small-ish town, word spreads quickly when a new restaurant opens. Unlike most new spots, though, this restaurant’s location is receiving as much attention as its food. It’s not every day that an authentic Mexican mom & pop taqueria opens up…inside the gas station.
You read that correctly.
La Flor de Morelos is located inside BP gas station.
Yes, really. Tables…vases on the tables…and damn good tamales.
I have to admit, I was a little leary about trying tacos from inside a gas station, but apparently I was the only hesitant one because the counter was packed.
While there were a few people sitting at tables (you still order at the counter), most of us were taking our orders to go. Of course, I had to try a little of everything off their menu: tacos, burritos, tamales, and elotes.
Most dishes you choose from steak, chicken, al pastor (pork), ground beef, chorizo, or cesina. Remember, this is authentic food, don’t expect any of the dishes to be drenched in cheese.
Tacos are topped with lettuce and tomato or cilantro and onion. I didn’t try my son’s steak tacos since I hate cilantro, but my daughter’s chicken burrito was generously sized and good.
The pork tamale also had good flavor, but was a little too spicy for me (I’m kind of a baby though!).
My hands down favorite…the Alambre taco: steak, bacon, green peppers, onions, and cheese on corn tortillas. Sadly, I offered to share.
Note to self: next time get two (though there were plenty of teen boys in line ahead of me ordering 4-5 each).
Any time it’s on the menu we have to order elotes. Again, a little too spicy for me, but washing it down with their horchata helped!
When was the last time you went into a gas station? A La Flor de Morelos Alambre taco is the perfect excuse to do so.
Open daily 10am-9pm.
