Shop Small Day 293: Fleckenstein's Bakery

If you live in the Mokena area, chances are you’ve heard of this bakery. If you aren’t from the area I can give you three reasons to go now: cheese danish, apple danish, and true German/Czech kolaczkis. Fleckenstein’s has been around since 1977, so while they aren’t going anywhere, the pastry displays aren’t full forever!

Fortunately, the day a baseball tournament brought us to Mokena they still had a decent selection left: cookies (even Stanley Cup Champions decorated cookies!), danishes, apple slices, and real (not the cookie version) sweet dough kolaczkis.

imageWe didn’t have a ton of time, so I didn’t check out their homemade breads, pies, or cakes…next time. Which, of course, we quickly decided that there will be a next time after trying our treats.

One bite and my son proclaimed his cheese danish the “best he’s ever had.” My daughter made the same declaration about her apple danish. I can only confirm that the crumbs they left for me to sample were delicious.

imageI didn’t really care about their danishes, though, because I was happy in my own little slice of heaven with their kolaczkis. Most bakeries carry cookie kolaczkis, but very few carry the kind I remember from my childhood- true German & Czech sweet dough versions in a variety of flavors: including my favorite raspberry, cheese, and apricot.

How popular are Fleckenstein’s baked goods? Their building is about 4000 sq. feet with 3100 sq. feet dedicated to on-site baking, the rest is for retail sales. Need a cake for a special ocassion? They do that. Need a tray of muffins, bagels, and danishes for your morning meeting? They do that too. Just want a perfect pastry? They definitely do that!

Check out Fleckenstein’s website for hours and baked goods options. Make sure you save a kolaczki for me.

  • We have used them for every birthday cake for our boys and they have always been helpful and punctual with our order. We are from the area and know we have a lot of other choices, but we always give them our business.

  • In reply to Megan Drozd:

I am definitely going to have to try their cakes! Many others have also responded that Fleckenstein's is their go-to for cakes. Frosting is good?
