Day 287: Fatty Lumpkins Sandwich Shack

Who’s ready for a road trip? The past couple of years our baseball team took on the Wisconsin Dells where I found surprisingly cool shops (remember Macs and Alpha Beta Karma?!). This year we drove a couple hours the other direction to the Grand Haven area. Lucky for us, we can leave in the morning and in three short hours make it back to Michigan just in time for lunch at Fatty Lumpkins Sandwich Shack!

I think my friends had serious doubts about where I’d led them when pulled up to Fatty’s. It is a bit outside of the “downtown” shopping area, and it felt like we were parking in someone’s driveway. And, from looking at it from outside, there was no way seven of us could sit down for lunch.

fatty lumpkinsI wasn’t worried though, it was too damn charming. But, the place is small. Considering we were there at an off time for lunch, Fatty’s was packed and we had to wait for a table (granted there are only a few tables anyways). Thankfully, most of the other customers were taking their orders to go.

Though Fatty Lumpkins is small in size it’s huge in taste. Fresh sliced Boars Head Meats and plenty of salads line the menu; create your own or choose own of their specialites: Wham Bam Thank You Ham anyone?!

Two friends chose the KC’s Kickin’ Chicken (think spicy buffalo chicken sandwich), another friend proclaimed this was the best egg salad sandwhich ever, and I was quite happy with my stacked roast beef and cheese.

Though one of my favorite charming touches was that the sandwiches were served on little wood cutting boards.

I know what you’re thinking, what’s up with the name? Is Fatty Lumpkin a real person?

You’ll have to ask owner Jera, or her boyfriend and co-owner Brett, for the full story. But lets just say that Fatty Lumpkin is more a likeness (than real person) of a former boss!

Don’t think twice about driving three hours for lunch, you’re going to make a weekend out of it…more to come in the Muskegon/Grand Haven area.
