Shop Small Day 209: Weber's Bakery

I love hearing about small businesses when friends share their favorite shops with me. But I have to admit I felt like a “johnny come lately” yesterday when everyone had heard of this place but me. Not to mention it’s been around since 1930. Apparently, I live in a box. And, apparently I was the only one who didn’t recognize the signature WB box of Weber’s Bakery.

Take one friend craving pie, add a generous neighbor going for a gorgeous weather Saturday drive, and you end up with a delicious Strawberry Whipped Cream pie on your doorstep.

Fortunately, since said friends were heading to my house for dinner, the pie ended up in my kitchen!

Turns out Weber Bakery made the wedding cake for another couple at dinner, and the third used to get weekly treats from there as a kid.

Where have I been?!

imageIt all started in 1930 when Erich Weber opened the original bakery. As an immigrant from Germany, he brought the fabulous taste of home to Chicago.

Grandson Michael followed in the family’s footsteps and now creates the delicious pastries, breads, and cakes at Weber’s Bakery using generations-old recipes.

Rumor has it they make true kolackys (not the cookie kind!), and their Plum Squares look an awful lot like mom’s kuchen cakes!

Weber’s is close to Midway Airport, so it’s the perfect stop when you’re picking up out of town guests, going for a Saturday drive, or want to bring me some kolackys!
