Yes, I know. There’s been a plethora of ice cream shops lately. But, c’mon it’s summertime and if I can’t have hot weather, at least I can get great ice cream. Today’s shop is in a class all its own. Since we were in the city, I decided to treat the kids to Black Dog Gelato.
Oh. My. God. is right!
This is not your ordinary ice-cream shop. Gelato is its own delicious entity anyway, but the flavors are what set it miles above the rest.
Mexican chocolate (with a serious kick), banana bread (incredible!), peanut-butter lavender marshmallow (seriously, wait until to your try it!), strawberry rhubarb sorbet, goat cheese cashew caramel, need I go on?!
I think we were lucky to arrive at a rare slow time because Megan(?) was incredibly patient with us as we tried virtually every flavor.
I tried stopping at Black Dog Gelato a few weeks ago when I visited Kasia’s Deli & Hoosier Mama Pie Company, but they were closed for renovations. The location on Damen is the original store (there’s a second shop on Belmont), but they needed to enlarge it already. Apparently the Belmont location is even bigger.
So, who is the mastermind behind these exotic flavors? Jessica Oloroso. After training under Stephanie Izard (Girl and the Goat) as a pastry chef at Scylla, Jessica took her creative combinations to new heights about 4 years ago when she opened Black Dog Gelato.
Although I’m already looking forward to my next scoop of banana bread, I’m definitely going back to try their Whiskey Gelato Bar. Not even kidding. Whiskey gelato, dipped in milk-chocolate, rolled in bacon, and served on a stick. Seriously, they’re open until 11 tonight, I may need to drive back down to the city now!
Wouldn’t those be awesome at your 4th of July picnic?!
What would be your dream gelato combination? I’m thinking Coffee gelato with Patron XO and slivers of dark chocolate and cashews. Hmmm, think she’ll let me intern?
