An Ode to Mike Royko

“It’s been my policy to view the Internet not as an ‘information highway’, but as an electronic asylum filled with babbling loonies.” ~Mike Royko

It is an irony isn’t it?  One of my idols, one of the best Pulitzer Prize winners of all time didn’t think much of the internet.  Yet, as I write my first blog of many for Chicago Now, I can’t help but dedicate this to him.  Mike Royko.  His name still can hardly pass thru my lips without me feeling the need to whisper it, as if  I were in Church.  I remember when I first stumbled upon his genius.  I was on my way to work, taking the bus from Addison and Broadway all the way downton.  I liked taking the long ride in the mornings then, because that’s when we all sat and quietly read our newspapers.  It was a cold day, one of those brisk autumn days when the pumpkins were ripe and the leaves were turning beautiful colors.  I was on the #36 bus when I noticed that someone had left their Chicago Tribune laying on the seat beside me.  I picked it up, and started perusing.

Anyone who remembers reading the Chicago Tribune when Mike Royko had his column knows exactly how far in to the newspaper I got.  As I glanced at the article, I really liked how the words went back and forth.  I loved how Royko could use words.  He could spin them around and around and lead down a very interesting patch, and at the end of that patch, you would get hit with a really good zinger at the end.  On this such day, back in the early 1990’s, he delivered quite a stinger.  Reading a Royko article was like playing on a teeter totter… one minute you were up, then you were down, then you were up, then you were down again.  His prose were a wild ride!

I always wanted my style of writing to be similar to his.  He used plain old English, and twisted the words around in such a way that you knew he was talking over your head, yet he was doing so with just those 5 cent words.  I always felt that he could talk his way out of a paper bag, if he needed to.

So, it is with that in mind that I write this blog…

I don’t have enough talent and I’m not smart enough to write the way that he did, but I will tell you that I am smart enough to know that, and talented enough to at least give it a try…

Without further adew; welcome to my blog!  This is my open canvas,  on an illuminated computer screen.  Welcome to my world, where I hope to entertain you with prose, and show you a different side to The City and to me.  No longer do you have to read articles on the “L” with a huge newspaper cleverly folded in a certain origami business style.  You have me on your digital device.  You are mobile, and my words fit into your pocket.  Thank you for taking the time to read the words that I have written, and I am glad you could join me here… because according to Royko…we’re in the electronic asylum together, and I am your Hostess here.  But don’t expect too much from me, because according to Mike Royko, in this electronic asylum, I’m just a babbling looney…
