Introducing the redesigned ChicagoNow

Tonight we unveiled a new design for ChicagoNow.

Our redesign had two goals:

1. Make it easier to find what you’re looking for.

2. Show the hot topics around Chicago.

Since ChicagoNow launched last summer, one of our biggest challenges has been navigation. It is hard to surface all of the great content that is posted to our site. On a given weekday, our 350+ bloggers post more than 100 entries and our users respond with hundreds of comments.

Our bloggers do a tremendous job of covering Chicago, but they can’t cover everything happening in our city. Nor should they. There are many great news organizations and independent websites covering Chicago. Why not link to them from ChicagoNow?

So that’s what we did.

Across our redesigned site, you’ll see a mix of both ChicagoNow posts and recent headlines from other local sources. Our favorite feature is on the homepage, just below the grid. Titled “Trending Headlines and Topics,” this list shows the topics Chicagoans are talking about right now.

As I write this post on Sunday evening, the top three topics are “Hurricane,” Gardening” and “Chicago Triathlon.” This make sense, considering it is the 5-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, the end of summer and Triathlon weekend. I imagine tomorrow morning the Emmys will top the list.

Click around and let us know what you think. We hope you like it.

  • This new home page is a hundred times better than the old text-based thing you had going on. On behalf of Silicon Second City, I thank you.
