Friday night we were at Joe’s on Weed Street. This music hotspot specializes in sports, live music and private parties and they are located near Lincoln Park in Chicago.
The evening’s performance was by the Josh Abbott Band. They hail from the state of Texas and bring with them a Texas fiddle-and-banjo country band sound. They have been called the “top tier TX country acts of this decade (Houston Press)”, the band pairs Josh’s ingratiating tenor and “deft melodies (Billboard)” with Texas twang and traditional instrumentation.
They founded the band in 2006 in Lubbock, Texas, while in college at Texas Tech. The band’s namesake, Josh Abbott, he paused his college career, a thesis away from his Master’s degree, to pursue a musical career full time. They recorded their first demo in 2007 and began touring in 2008. They released their first albums in 2009 and then their second in 2010 when they hit the Top Country Albums charts. Releasing their third CD in 2012 and this month they announced their fourth studio album, titled Front Row Seat, a concept album detailing Abbott’s relationship and failed marriage with his ex-wife.
Opening for Josh Abbott Band was Zach DuBois, a 26 year-old country music singer-songwriter born and raised in Elkhart, IN. As part of an entrepreneurship class during his senior year of college at the University of Notre Dame, he developed a business model for his own record label which he started in 2011, Backstory Records. Thus begin a career as a touring singer-songwriter instead of going to medical school or graduate school. After 3 years of touring, he has played shows across much of the US, sharing the stage with the likes of David Nail, Jerrod Niemann, Randy Houser, Old Dominion, Parmalee, Dan+Shay, and Jack Ingram. DuBois has released 2 studio albums. In regards to his recent move to Nashville, DuBois had this to say, “I am a songwriter, first and foremost, so I am extremely excited about the incredible opportunities to continue to hone and improve my craft among some of the most creative and talented songwriters in the country.”
After viewing this well attended show by both groups perform, we are happy to rate them with four guitars. Great job guys, keep up the good work.
