The Joys of January

The Joys of January
Happy new year! Here comes the new page of January, unwritten as freah-fallen snow.  It’s  a chance to begin again—out with the old, in with the new! And yet, in our  routine  of days,  how quickly the  page is covered with appointments and errands, assignments, projects, things to do. New things and old  occupy our... Read more »

November Trees

November Trees
The first snow of the season fell  on Friday and  Saturday,  covering the autumn leaves. Sunday was  cold,  intense blue sky, and a rain of falling mulberry leaves.  It was a downpour, a shower of leaves.  Mulberries  are very sensitive to temperature.  You can read more about them, here. The maples and the ginkgoes, too,... Read more »

Blood Moon 4 --- Totality--- Sept. 27-28

 Blood Moon 4 --- Totality--- Sept. 27-28
Skywatchers will be in for  a super  show this  month as the full moon lights  the night of September 27-28.  It will  be a “supermoon” or a perigee full moon,  the moon’s closest approach to the Earth. The moon does appear larger and brighter at perigee.  As if that weren’t  spectacular enough, on the night of... Read more »

You can read that post here. Yes, the crows had returned!  I have been watching their comings... Read more »

As they said on the X-Files, “The Truth is out there” but no longer in the checkout... Read more »

Spotted things

Spotted things
Taking out the garbage, I was surprised by a giant moth. It is a hawk moth; they frequent the moonflowers on  late summer nights. The moonflowers are  full of ripening seedpods, now.Their season is almost done. In the clarity of this autumnal light, the world is full of spotted things–mottled bananas and pears. Light and... Holy smoke! Fire clouds?

Holy smoke! Fire clouds?
While Chicagoans  are experiencing very pleasant weather, wildfires are raging in California, Oregon and Northwest Canada. The fires are  producing  more than clouds of smoke and ash. They are causing astonishing cloud formations called pyrocumulus clouds. They are also known as “fire clouds. ” Fire clouds  are similar to the classic  cauliflower-topped cumulus clouds, but the...
