For those of us old enough to remember, the Chicago Cubs played a couple games every year cancelled due to darkness. Prior to the installation of lights in 1988, this was just a way of life.
As time has gone by, it’s been easy to forget the oddity of the event. A game would be suspended if it got too dark…then months later, if the teams were to meet again, the game would start from the same point…as if it had never stopped.
Here are the Cubs and Pirates from 1986…playing one of the longest games in Wrigley’s history. Click toward the end of video 1 to see how dark it gets, and then look at the start of video 2 to see how they begin post-suspension.
