The Guild Complex kicks-off their 2011 Palabra Pura reading series tonight with an event at Humboldt Park’s La Bruquena restaurant (2726 W. Division). The event will feature 26 local poets reading one poem each. It will give the audience a sense of what the series will be like this year and a sense of where it has been.
The first reading in the series will curated by Quraysh Ali Lansana and featuring Kelly Ellis and Carmen Gimnez Smith, and held at La Bruquena on Wednesday, March 23rd, 7:30pm. A poet participating in tonight’s event and curating November’s reading is Luis Humberto Valadez. Here is what he had to say about the series “I think Palabra Pura is a great institution in the city for local writers to gain exposure and make connections on the national level. I also think it’s important to have a an organization in the city like the Guild who is willing to fund this work for the community. Palabra Pura is only one of the projects of the Guild that promotes diverse literary voices in the city. Most importantly, despite it’s prestige the Guild Complex is very community oriented and open to providing non-published writers with opportunities to have their voices heard without regard to group, university, or artistic affiliation.”
Luis is also reading at The Orange Alert Reading Series at The Whistler (2421 N. Milwaukee Ave.) this Sunday at 6pm.
