On November 20th the vision of Don Evans, Executive Director of The Chicago Literary Hall of Fame, became a reality. Through honoring six of Chicago’s most influential Chicago writers, Evans and everyone else involved brought the history and legacy of Chicago Lit to life. The event was also a coming together, of sorts, that joined past, present and future of the Chicago scene. The inductees included Algren, Brooks, Hansberry, Terkel, Bellow, Terkel, and Wright, but the event included the likes of Fred Sasaki, Stuart Dybek, Haki Madhubuti, and others as well as two poets from Young Chicago Authors that nearly stole the show. The night ran long, but was perfect. From Rick Kogan stories from his youth and interacting with the inductees to enthralling tales of the life of Nelson Algren from Art Shay, every moment seemed so valuable. Recently Don Evans to some time to discuss his thoughts on the event, and what next years class and selection committee might look like.
