Coach Tim Beckman landed a pretty important although bound to be somewhat overlooked recruit today. It’s the ultimate needs-based pick up. Yuo can easily say without hyperbole that Illinois had the worst special teams in all of college football
last year. Aside from the placekicking, it was all around atrocious and cost them a win at Penn State
, and probably another two games as well.
The return game was stunningly bad, but it got a nice boost in defensive back and kick returner Tommy Davis, who will transfer to Illinois for the 2012 season after spending the last four years at Northern Illinois University...
I received a mass email today from the Illinois Alumni Association. The subject heading: ILLINOIS: Chicago’s Big Ten University The message content: Illinois alumni don’t need an expensive roadside billboard to let people know we’re the best public Big Ten university in Chicago! Instead, make your case in your office space by displaying your loyalty... Read more »
Earlier this week it was announced that this Illinois football spring game would have a couple culinary twists. Newly installed coach Tim Beckman decided that the losing team would have to eat frank and beans as their postgame meal. Not sure what the winners got, but I’m assuming it’s real food. ‘‘This is a competition,’’... Read more »
“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” For Illini fans in 2011-12, both were true. In both revenue producing sports. On the college football gridiron, Illinois started 6-0, on the strength of some ugly wins: (Northwestern, Western Michigan), and ascended to #16 in the nation. They lost as favorites to... This has got to be one of the most inspiring stories of the college football bowl season. This is more than a comeback. University of Illinois senior linebacker Trulon Henry was injured in a off-campus shooting November 13th. Henry, a two-year starter for the Illini (he moved from safety to linebacker this year) was shot... Read more »
Currently, the Illinois Fighting Illini football team is ranked #15 in the country. Yes, the 6-0 Illini are the 15th best team in college football according to the coaches’ poll. Still, they’re not selling out Memorial Stadium. Most Saturdays, they fall very short of packing the place. This atmosphere inspired Dan O’Brien, owner/proprietor of... Read more »
Earlier this college football season, University of Illinois senior wide receiver A.J. Jenkins made some comments that proclaimed himself the best wide receiver in the Big Ten. He has since backed off from those remarks, and now maintains a more standard, PR-friendly, humble and some could say vanilla manner in his on-the-record comments to the... Read more »
It was a week where one school’s marketing slogan became a motivational rallying cry for the other school in the state. Northwestern has been promoting themselves as “Chicago’s Big Ten Team” for a season and half, and today Illinois made stated pretty loudly how they felt about it. Quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase scored a 1-yard touchdown... Read more »
Big Ten conference play begins with the annual in-state rivalry game between the Northwestern Wildcats and Illinois Fighting Illini. It does feel a little weird not having this game played on the last week of the season, when all the other intrastate, intra-region bloodfeud games are held. But last year it was such a special... Given the recent tradition/memories of the last two players to wear the famed #5 in Champaign: Mikel Leshoure (a Detroit Lions rookie who will miss the season with an injury) and the Pittsburgh Steelers Rashard Mendenhall (who’s developed into a Pro Bowl, 1,000 yard rusher style NFL back) it’s easy to see why the jersey...
