As college and high school students head off to school, the summer festivals begin to slow down, and the weather… well the weather changes daily so that’s invalid, but it all means one thing. The fall season of Chicago Area Rugby is upon us! That’s right 15s season is here and if you are a recent grad who is now realizing you haven’t found a club yet, make sure to look at my ISO posts, that detail various clubs around Chicago.
If you are currently in college, on a club team, or even a high school women’s team and just looking for a scrimmage and a bit of action before games start, you can check out Chicago North Shore’s rugby clinic this weekend. The team is hosting a free collegiate skills clinic Saturday August 23rd at Montrose Beach. All players are welcome, any level or experience, and then you can stay and hang out for a BBQ with the team. It will be a low key social and the more people you get to play with, the more you can always learn. You can RSVP to this event, on Facebook.
If you are in the south suburbs, you can check out the Chicago Riot at the Blaze fields in Lemont. Both D2 & D4 teams will be playing with Kick-Off at 1pm. The event is posted on Facebook, as well. Both the Riot and the Blaze had a strong 15s season last year, so the games should be well matched. After the games, there will be a social at the Blaze Club House.
After you’re done running around for the day and are ready to get ready to relax, you can say good bye to the summer season with one last Luau. The Chicago Griffins will be hosting their 3rd Annual Season Kick Off Luau. Get dressed up in your grass skirts, coconut bras, floral shirts and khakis and leis. There will be a wristband for $30 that goes from 8-11 that includes Founders, domestics, wells, and Hawaiian drinks. It will be at the Black Rock 3416 N. Damen.
The Sunday for those of you going to the Sirens’ Golf Tournament, have a blast and hopefully it doesn’t rain out. Next weekend you can join the Chicago Rugby Club on their pub crawl. August 30th, the club will be taking over Madison Street in Forrest Park, all ruggers and supporters of the game and club are welcome. Wristbands to enjoy the specials will be $10, Wristband+ T-shirt combo will be $20. Full event details are online at, of course Facebook!
