Two haunted houses you can skip: Psychosis and Haunted Mansion & Asylum 13

It’s haunted house week at Chicago Quirk! I’ve personally visited six different haunted houses, and every post this week will be dedicated to reviewing a different Chicagoland haunt….the best and the worst.

I’ve been to some awesome haunted houses, but now it’s time to tell you about two not-so-awesome haunted houses: Psychosis Haunted House and Haunted Mansion & Asylum 13. Both ‘not awesome’ for different reasons, but skip them either way.

Getting There
Psychosis Haunted House: Pretty simple. Just plug the address in to your GPS, and you’ll get there in no time. It’s right by Hemmens auditorium so plenty of parking.

Haunted Mansion and Asylum 13: This one is actually in Ditka’s Sports Dome, so you really can’t miss it.

The Backstory
Psychosis Haunted House: Generic haunted house.

Haunted Mansion and Asylum 13: Two generic haunted houses in one. Although I definitely did not get the feeling these were divided up.

The Sets
Psychosis Haunted House: From the second you walk up to the front you won’t expect much. I don’t even know what kind of building it’s in. The waiting area was designed to look like storefronts, and sadly those were the best sets I saw.

Haunted Mansion and Asylum 13: Low budget but a good effort. One thing I really liked were the tactile effects throughout the haunted house: furry walls, low hanging ceilings made of gauzy materials, fishline that brushed the top of your head. Good stuff.

The Creatures
Psychosis Haunted House: Psychosis is advertised as Chicagoland’s most interactive haunted house, which gives it an interesting twist. Instead of just screaming and being a generic haunted house character, the actors really play with you. It ends up being a combination of scary AND funny. Unfortunately, one of the actors was a little TOO interactive: he cornered me with his arms on either side of me so I couldnt move and just about licked my face. I asked him to stop and he wouldn’t!!!!!! I literally had to crawl away from him!! I know you’re not supposed to touch the creatures, but that guy almost got bitch slapped.

Haunted Mansion and Asylum 13: I think the actors were the best part. They were young and screamy, but they had energy and their costumes weren’t too bad.

Best Feature
Psychosis Haunted House: One of the only good features at this haunted house was a CRAZY maze at the end. It’s really just a room with a three-foot high maze, but it’s completely black with creatures all in black jumping out at you. You could NOT see them! And to top it off they had weird rainbow laser lights flying everywhere.

Haunted Mansion and Asylum 13: I was curious about the VORTEX and cage maze that the website mentioned. The VORTEX was one of those trippy spinning tunnels that always makes me want to throw up, and the cage maze was a very cool maze in the middle of the house that my group definitely got lost in.

Would I Go Back?
No to both. Haunted Mansion and Asylum was so close to Statesville Haunted Prison that I’d rather go there. Psychosis just kind of sucked.

Insider Tips
Psychosis Haunted House: Apparently there’s some sort of “get kidnapped” option where for an extra $10 you or a member of your group will be taken away from your group and “made part of the experience.” I asked the ticket people what that meant, but they wouldn’t give me a straight answer. They did show me a rather extensive waiver you have to sign to participate. No thank you.

Haunted Mansion and Asylum 13: If you do decide to go to this haunted house, stick around after and hit the bar in Ditka’s Sports Dome. I stuck my head in and saw the future cast of the Real Housewives of Bolingbrook. If it wasn’t such a long drive back I probably would have stuck around.

Psychosis Haunted House: Ladies get $8 admission on Thursday nights if you bring this coupon AND cat or dog food. Um, strange.

Haunted Mansion and Asylum 13: If you print the haunted house’s Facebook page you get $2 off general admission.

Psychosis Haunted House is open Fridays and Saturdays from 7:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. and on Thursdays and Sundays from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. General admission is $16. Skip the line with VIP admission for $25. However, if you buy your tickets online it’s $14 for general admission and $23 for VIP admission.

Haunted Mansion and Asylum 13 is open Fridays and Saturdays from 6:00 to 11:00 p.m. and Thursdays and Sundays from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. General admission is $20 on Fridays and Saturdays and $17 on Thursdays and Sundays.

  • I take the tickets at Psychosis, and trust me when I say that I tell everyone who asks what the "kidnapping" involves. The "rather extensive waiver" is only 1/4 of a page long. You can bring in canned pet food for a discount because we donate it to The Buddy Foundation in Arlington Heights, which is a no kill animal shelter. On Ladies' Night (Thursday) ladies bring the coupon and pet food to get in for only $8 on all other night a can of pet food gets you $2 off admission.
I am sorry about the guy who licked your face. If you give me a description of the actor and the room you were in when it happened, I can let the owner know and he can take care of it.

  • He didn't ACTUALLY lick my face, I said he practically licked my face. And it was a year ago so I don't remember who it was. I appreciate your comments, but I'm trying to find the best haunted houses in the Chicago area. While Psychosis had a few highlights, it's not good enough to be considered with the likes of Fear City and Statesville.

  • Sorry but Statesville is hardly up the caliber referred to here, unless of course you liked being screamed at for 30 minutes with smelly actors.

  • In reply to mercyah:

HAHAHA! Yeah, getting screamed at is my least favorite part. But when it comes down to sets and effects, I think Statesville does it very well. That being said, I don't think they're the best. Especially after doing my round of visits this year.
