Permanent Records is back at Uncharted Books! Hosted by HEAVEmedia’s features editor, Dominick Suzanne-Mayer, this monthly reading series is dedicated to looking back on the embarrassment of youth. Curators encourage those who are interested in speaking at Permanent Records to bring diary or blog posts, songs or any other memorabilia from their youth. Anyone can read at this event, as long as you get to Uncharted Books by 7pm. Free, BYOB.
Tuesday October 29th
Don’t miss We Aim to Unsettle: The MCA presents Upgrade Soul and Video Musics III: Floating Oceans at 6pm at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Chicago. This event will open with a reading from Ezra Claytan Daniels‘ interactive graphic novel, Upgrade Soul with live music by Alexis Gideon. Gideon will conclude the night by presenting the latest installment of his animated rap opera series, Video Musics III: Floating Oceans. Free.
Homeroom presents Barbie 101: Love & Imagination at The Hungry Brain. “101 is an informal performance series in which enthusiasts explore sub and pop culture in front of a drinking crowd. It takes place on occasional Tuesdays at the Hungry Brain in Roscoe Village.” David Trinidad will read from his poem, “Playing with Dolls”, Robyn Pennacchia will present a slideshow of Barbies through the ages, Jamie Kazay will talk art, and Tim “TinTim” Jones-Yelvington will explore the relationship between the LGBQT community and Barbie. Through out the night there will be short videos, femmebot poetry and jamming to Jem and The Misfits. This event will be hosted by Fred Sasaki and Seth Vanek, with featured art by Tselanie Townsend. 9pm, 21+, $5 suggest donation.
Wednesday October 30th
It would be unwise to miss The Encyclopedia Show presents Funerals at Stage 773 at 7:30pm. Featured performers include Samantha Irby, Mason Johnson, Molly Kuhlman, Eric Sirota, Lamar Jorden, Anthony Sanders and Sarah Dolan. The Encyclopedia Show is a live literary variety show that offers comedy, storytelling, live music, monologues, spoken word and has roots in California, Texas, Germany and Korea. If you come to the All Hallows’ Eve Eve Variety Show at The California Clipper, not only do you get to enjoy the rustic charm of the restored 1940s speakeasy (The California Clipper), but you also get to enjoy exclusive performances by Audrey Niffenegger, Chris Hefner, Fred Sasaki, Margaret Chapman and many, more. Jill Summers and Susan Kirkwood will perform a puppet show, there’s a chance to win a giant worried pumpkin created by Jason Waclawik! We also hear The California Clipper has a resident ghost who likes to haunt the ladies’ room and booths one and nine. This event is hosted by the amazing people over at CHiPRC (Chicago Publisher’s Resource Center) and starts at 8:30pm. $7 cover, includes raffle ticket. Festive dress and costumes encouraged.
Thursday October 31st
7 Stories (The Line Between): Halloween show at Martin’s Corner at 8pm. This will absolutely be a great time! A haunting open mic, frightening games and a dance party are in order. Spend your Halloween the right way by coming to this awesome new series. Costumes are required. $5 cover charge.
