Literary Events in May

May 1st

Celebrate RUI: Reading Under the Influence’s eighth birthday on the back patio at Sheffield’s. There’s a $3 cover and domestic beers are $2. The event starts at 7pm and features performances by RUI’s own Rob Duffer, Julia Borcherts, Amy Guth and Erin Nederbo. The event will also showcase emerita Jesse Jordan and Carly Huegelmann and soon-to-be hosts Bronwyn Mead and Jon Natzke. Congratulations RUI on going eight years strong!


May 2nd

The Encyclopedia Show presents Origin of Life on Thursday at the Vittum Theater. The event starts at 7:30pm and features co-founder of Featherproof Books Jonathan Messinger, author of “SIRvival in the Second City” H-Melt, LTAB college champions Nina Coomes and Melanie Decelles, lead singer of Milo & Otis Jamila Woods, co-founder of Glass City Fatimah Asgharand visual artist Matt Bogart. The show also boasts a unique partnership with Emory University’s Center for Chemical Evolution. Tickets are $9 for adults and $6 for students. Buy tickets here:

May 7th

Two Cookie Minimum is back and is celebrating Columbia College Chicago’s Fiction Writing Department. Featured readers include Megan Stielstra, Jael Montellano, Aaron Golding, Jenny Seay, Tony Luce and Cyn Vargas. The event will be hosted by the always charismatic Johnny Misfit and will take place at The Hungry Brain at 9pm. (21+)

May 21st

Curbside Splendor Publishing and Other Voices Books are hosting Words+Music #3: Hunter, Roberge & Meno! at The Empty Bottle. Come celebrate the release of new books by Rob Roberge, Lindsay Hunter and Joe Meno set to the music of Billy Blake, The Vagabonds and Swimsuit Addition. The event starts at 9pm and goes until midnight and is FREE if you RSVP with this link:
