If you have never been to the Green & Growing Fair at the Garfield Park Conservatory you should make a plan to attend this year. It is the only urban gardening fair in Chicago. It’s part festival, plant sale, social gathering, and a master class on urban and community gardening in Chicago. There are workshops and events for gardeners of all ages. The fair runs from 11:00am to 4:00pm.
My favorite part of the event is the opportunity to buy plants and seedlings for the garden. There are always community gardens, local farms, and organizations selling all kinds of plant material and the price for the plants usually start at $1.00.
Every year at the fair the winner of One Seed Chicago is announced, and there is a seed distribution of the winner at the One Seed Chicago table. This year there will be a mini seed swap at the One Seed Chicago table so bring your home saved heirloom seeds to swap with other One Seed Chicago voters and growers. Outside in the patio, the Garfield Park Conservatory holds a planting party where you can plant this year’s One Seed Chicago winner in a newspaper pot and take it home. In the children’s garden there is also pizza garden activity that you can participate in. For a full listing of events and workshops at the Green & Growing Fair check out the post on the One Seed Chicago blog.
