Chicago Gardening Events for May 2011

May brings us a perfect opportunity to buy plants in Chicago for your garden during several plants sales. Organic vegetable seedlings, tomato plants, native plants and even plants for container gardens will all be available at several plants sale throughout the city. Below are dates times and plants available at plant sales for the Lurie Garden, Wicker Park Garden Club, Paseo Prairie Garden, Garfield Park Conservatory and the Kilbourn Park Organic Greenhouse. Stocking your garden with these native plants, organic and heirloom varieties has many benefits. The biggest being that you’re supporting garden groups, community gardens and organizations that green Chicago. 

Lurie Garden Plant Sale

May 7, 2011. 10am-3pm
The Lurie Garden is having their first-ever plant sale. The native Plants available for sale will be  Agastache ‘Blue Fortune,’ Allium ‘Summer Beauty,’ Amsonia ‘Northwind,’ Calamint and Prairie Smoke. If you’ve ever been amazed at the salvia river at the Lurie Garden you’ll want to checkout the two varieties of salvia that will be available, Salvia ‘Wesuwe’ and Salvia ‘Blue Hill.’ Quart-size perennials will be priced at $5, proceeds benefit the Lurie Garden’s free workshops. There will also be gardening demos, tips and tours of the plants in bloom at the garden. 
Wicker Park Garden Club Plant Sale & Workshops
May 7th & 8th 10am-4pm.
This plant sale is a fundraiser for the Park Gardens and Garden Educational programming for the Wicker Park Garden Club. Annuals, perennials and vegetables and herbs will be for sale. In addition to the plant sale the club offers workshops at the same time as the sale. 10:30am –  noon. Entry to the plant sale is free, but there are fees for the workshops.  
10:30am –  noon: Vegetable and Ornamental Container Designs $15 REGISTER:
1pm – 2:30 pm: Shade Garden Designs $10 REGISTER:
PRUNER SHARPENING – Saturday & Sunday, May 7 & 8 – 11am- 2pm Bring Your Pruners and Get them Sharpened – $5 for each pruner
FILL YOUR CONTAINER – SATURDAY & SUNDAY, May 7 & 8 – 10am – 4pm Plant your own container with some advice from the garden volunteers. Price based on cost of materials and size of pot.
Paseo Prairie Garden Plant Sale
May 7th & 8th. 10am-2pm.
The Paseo Prairie Garden’s fundraising plant sale will offer native perennials, vegetables and herbs. Profifts from the plant sale will go towards the native prairie garden. The plant sale will at the intersection of Kedzie and Milwaukee in the Logan Square neighborhood. 
Garfield Park Conservatory Spring Seedling Sales
May 7, 14th & 21st. 9:30am-3:30pm
Unqiue, weird and heirloom plants are what you’ll find at the seedling sales for the Garfield Park Conservatory. You can pick up things like heirloom tomatoes, corn, beans, squash, tomatillos and peppers and some All-American Selection plant varieties. This is my go-to plant sale for veggetable plants in Chicago. Lots of cool stuff here.   
Kilbourn Park Organic Greenhouse Annual Plant Sale
May 14th & 15th 10am-2pm
Large selection of organically grown vegetables, flowers and herbs at this greenhouse that’s managed by the Chicago Park District. Go for the organically grown peppers and tomato seedlings and check out what other plants they have to offer.  The Kilbourn Park Organic Greenhouse is located at 3501 N. Kilbourn Ave.
