Trees at Home Depot Half Off!

Home Depot trees on sale in Chicago.png
In the post about espaliered trees I mentioned that I was inspired to buy Rick Bayless’ urban edible garden to buy some and plant them in my garden. I noted that espaliered trees are usually the last to sell in the big box garden centers I visit. Well, I just came back from a local Home Depot and what do they have marked 50% off ?

Fruit trees along with shade and flowering trees are on sale and they have a number of espaliered apple trees left. The trees are grafted with four varieties of semi-dwarf apples. Hopefully, they’ll still have them tomorrow when I’ll have access to a truck.

At the bottom of the post on Northern Catalpa trees I listed some tree resources for gardeners and home owners you may be interested in. You can also get free wood chip mulch from the city.

For the record: I’m not mentioning the tree sale at Home Depot because they are advertisers on ChicagoNow or because they are the sponsors of the Glorious Gardens Contest with the Tribune or because anyone asked me to. I think a search of the MrBrownThumb blog will illustrate a history of shopping there and criticizing them in the past. Just thought I should mention that.

  • Man, disregard my email, this seems to be working again. ANYWAY, I've gotten all my trees and shrubs at Big Box sales. In 25 years only had one casualty. This is a great thing to do.

Hi Xan, glad whatever was keeping you from signing in was resolved. 25 years and one casualty? That's a really good track record for Big Box store shopping.

  • Like Xan, I've gotten the majority of my shrubs at big box stores. I needed a privacy hedge, of sorts, and there's NO WAY I could have afforded that elsewhere. Evergreens go on sale later in the season; one year they were $3.33 each, though subsequent years $6.66, but still a bargain. Smaller than the $50/$60 kinds are other places, but they've grown quickly and you can't beat the price. So far, knock on wood!, I haven't lost any.

  • In reply to gardenfaerie:

When the evergreens go on sale for 3.33 I'm always tempted to buy a bunch to make a knot garden or something. It seems a waste that many of those evergreens seem to get tossed after the snows come and nobody buys them.

  • In reply to MrBrownThumb:

That's when hardy souls try dumpster diving! :) I've not tried that myself, though I do curbside shop!

  • In reply to MrBrownThumb:

I found Espaliered apples and pears at Fertile Gardens 70% off. Still have some for sale Sept 12.

  • In reply to MrBrownThumb:

When I am ready to throw in the towel with the "shop local", "eat local" "live green" "sustainable life choices" .............
then I will shop at the big boxes.
