Spring seems to have sprung but I know this weekend is slated to be rainy and cold! I got a sneak peek at some cool movies worth going to – Bridesmaids and the new Pirates of the Caribbean. Last night, the Greater Chicago Food Depository held their annual canstruction event to fight hunger in the local area. Artists and architects put together some very inventive and thematic sculptures, more on that next week!

Chef Tasting Bites
StarChefs.com will celebrate its Chicago Rising Stars Award winners on Monday, May 23, 2011 at Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park from 7 to 10 p.m. The Rising Stars Revue is a walk-around tasting gala featuring signature savory dishes, desserts, and drinks presented by the Rising Stars. These awards recognize up-and-coming chefs, pastry chefs, sommeliers, and mixologists from around the country, and a few of our local winners include Stephanie Izard of Girl & the Goat, Jimmy Bannos, Jr. of The Purple Pig, and Jared Van Camp of Old Town Social.

Brunch in River North
The dining scene along River North’s popular Hubbard Street corridor is heating up this spring with the addition of a new brunch destination – Hubbard Inn. Run by Proprietors Adolfo Garcia, Daniel Alonso, and David Mitria, the three-month-old Continental tavern will add brunch service to its culinary line-up every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., starting this Saturday, May 14.
Cooking Demo al fresco
Mark your calendars. Beginning Tuesday, May 31, Executive Chef Scott Walton of Markethouse Restaurant and Bar kicks off his Heartland 101 Garden Series atop the restaurant’s magnificent rooftop garden. Offered once a month on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., guests will enjoy an informative evening alfresco with demonstrations by Chef Scott of five garden-driven dishes, along with tips, recipes and generous tastings of each dish paired with cocktails or beer. Each class is $45 per person and limited to 40 guests. Reservations are required and may be made by calling 312.224.2200.
One of THE best outside spots
The Terrace at Trump, the downtown hotel’s sophisticated outdoor dining venue, will open Wednesday, May 18, at 2:30 p.m. The chic, 16th floor outdoor oasis – which has become one of the city’s most sought-after destinations since opening in 2009 – showcases a dramatic vista of the Chicago skyline as well a picturesque view of Lake Michigan, along with the Chicago River and its famous bridges.
This season, The Terrace at Trump will grow significantly to encompass the entirety of the property’s 16th floor outdoor space. Accommodating up to 164 seated guests (60 more than in 2010), the venue will also feature a summer 2011 theme embracing a worldwide trend that has yet to make its mark on the Midwest: Polynesian chic.
World Ocean Day
Prairie Fire (215 N. Clinton in Chicago; 312-382-8300) is honoring World Ocean Day in cooperation with the John G. Shedd Aquarium 6 p.m. June 8. The event features presentations by Shedd Aquarium staff-Melanie Napoleon, Senior Director of Great Lakes Conservation and Brooke Havlik, Sustainable Seafood Educator-and an educational, all-inclusive four-course dinner with pairings for $100 per person. New DMK Burger
Joe’s Hot Dog Burger contains an all grass-fed beef patty, a grilled hotdog and comes with the traditional Chicago dog toppings. Ya know, yellow mustard, Spanish onion, Wisconsin cheddar spread, celery salt, tomato, sport peppers and pickle relish of course! Chicagoans wouldn’t dare have their dog any other way. . DMK will be serving this burger throughout the summer season for $10.
Beer Lovers Celebrate Craft Beer Week
C-House, located inside the Affinia Chicago, is calling all beer lovers to celebrate Chicago’s Craft Beer Week. From May 19 through 27 C-House will be offering a three-course menu for $39 pairing local beers with dishes from acclaimed Top Chef Marcus Samuelsson.
