Chicago Horror and Halloween Guide 2016

Chicago horror fans are really getting the full treatment this year. After working on event postings for many, many years, I’ve never seen as many options pop up as they have for the 2016 Halloween season. It’s time to share as many Halloween / horror events as I could possibly find in the Chicago area for those of you wanting to try something a little different, and, hopefully, a little weird. Get some coffee going, sit back, and enjoy choosing which event to celebrate October madness!


Drive-In HorrorThe McHenry Outdoor Cinema will show CASPER and THE ADDAMS FAMILY (Oct. 28th & 29th). The Cascade Drive-In screens BOO! A Madea Halloween and Ouija: Origin of Evil (Oct. 28th-30th).

Logan Theatre Horror Movie Madness (through 10/31) Catch Nosferatu (1922) with live organ accompaniment by Jay Warren on 10/28 & 10/29. Watch it with the original score on 10/30 & 10/31. Halloween (1978) screens 10/28-31. Family matinee of It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown on October 30th at 3pm (free for up to 4 family members). Located at 2646 N. Milwaukee Avenue, Chicago, IL.

Altered States: Body Horror in Cinema at Doc Films (Thursdays through 12/1) Each Thursday, catch a tantalizing body horror film at Doc Films! Coming soon: Altered States, Videodrome, Tetsuo, and An American Werewolf in London. They’re also having a free Mystery Screening on Halloween! Music Box Theatre Movies – This beloved venue always rocks October horror. Options include: In a Valley of Violence, 30th Anniversary of Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, Kizumonogatari Pt. 2: Nekketsu, Videodrome, Park Chan-wook’s The Handmaiden, RHPS, The Mummy (followed by a discussion), and much more. 3733 N. FRIDAY THE 13th – Free 8pm screening Oct. 28th outdoors on the Northerly Island Museum Campus at 1521 S. Linn White Dr., Chicago, IL. Roast marshmallows by the campfire! All ages. Bring blankets and chairs.

THE SIMILARS – (Oct. 28th & 31st) Chicago premiere of Mexican sci-fi film following a Twilight Zone-esque story about eight characters waiting for a bus at an empty terminal one dark, stormy night as acid rain triggers strange mutations. Part of the Gene Siskel Film Center’s “Hola Mexico 2016” film series. 164 N. State Street, Chicago, IL 60601.

BOOTLEG GRUMLINS – Mondays at the Logan Arcade offer Gremlins knockoff films. On Halloween, see Ghoulies 3: Ghoulies Go to College at 6:30pm and Gremlins 2: The New Batch at 8:00pm. Free popcorn. 2410 W. Fullerton.

THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW – As always, the Rocky Horror fun will a full cast performance will be happening Saturday at Midnight at the Hollywood Blvd. Cinema, 1001 W. 75th St., Woodridge, IL 60517. (630) 427-1880.

THE SHINING & A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET – Enjoy free screenings and discussions on Oct. 28th. The Shining begins at 3:30pm; NOES starts at 7pm. Northbrook Public Library, 1201 Cedar Lane, Northbrook, IL 60062.

THE BAT – (Oct. 29th) The Silent Film Society of Chicago presents the 1926 classic with live organ accompaniment by Jay Warren. 7pm at the First United Church of Christ in Lockport, IL.

A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET with MIMI CRAVEN – (Oct. 29th) Join Wes Craven’s ex-wife in sharing memories of working on the NOES films and other Craven classics. Mimi will be signing autographs. Hollywood Palms Cinema, 352 S. Route 59, Naperville, IL 60540. (5pm-10pm)

FRANKENSTEIN National Theatre Live – (Oct. 29th & 30th) On Saturday, Jonny Lee Miller plays Victor Frankenstein and Benedict Cumberbatch plays the Creature. On Sunday, Cumberbatch plays Victor Frankenstein while Jonny Lee Miller plays the Creature. Gene Siskel Film Center, 164 N. State.

THE WAILING – (Oct. 30th) Korean supernatural thriller. Wilmette Theatre, 1122 Central Avenue, Wilmette, IL.

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME – (Oct. 30th) Doc Films presents this event at the Rockefeller Chapel, 5850 S. Woodlawn, Chicago, IL 60637. Live organ accompaniment by Dennis James and live carillon by Joey Brink.

Facets presents Halloween shorts – (Oct. 30th) As part of the Chicago International Children’s Film Festival, Facets presents animated shorts HALLOWEEN: Monsters and Mischief, HALLOWEEN: Delusions and Illusions, and MOLLY MONSTER at the Music Box Theatre, 3733 N. Halloween Symphony Concert – “MAGIC, CURSES, AND SPELLS!” The University of Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Hyde Park School of Dance present a special concert celebrating Halloween. Halloween at Navy Pier – Check the site for all kinds of family-friendly activities happening at Navy Pier this weekend! October 29th, catch a screening of The Addams Family at 6pm. Chicago Hauntings Bus Tours – One of the longest-running ghost tours in Chicago, each 2.5 hour tour is led by founder, paranormal investigator, and author Ursula Bielski and her partner, author David Cowan. I KNOW WHAT YOU SANG LAST SUMMER – The Annoyance Theater presents an improvised horror musical on Thursday nights from through October 27th. Each week will be different, as the title and theme (Slasher, Creature, Demon, or Zombie) for the musical is given via audience suggestion. The cast improvises an hour-long musical horror film with a short intermission. The Annoyance Theater & Bar, 851 W. Belmont, Chicago, IL.

The Best of DEATHSCRIBE – WildClaw Theatre’s Deathscribe is an annual festival of radio horror plays performed live with foley effects. They’ve chosen five of the best entries and will present them with live performances on October 22nd. 1700 Theatre at Steppenwolf.
