Northwestern unveils non-conference schedule
Before he had to play through nagging injuries Shurna looked like the best player on Northwestern and an all-Big Ten performer. He still finished the season ranked in almost every tempo-free category and averaged 16.5 ppg and 4.5 rpg.

The Wildcats pulled the wraps off their non-conference basketball schedule today for the 2011-2012 season.

After an exhibition against Robert-Morris, NU completes its home-and-home against UT-Pan American (NU won 77-71 won last season) in its Nov. 13 home-opener.

Next comes the Charleston Classic with a guaranteed game against LSU and possible games against Georgia Tech, Seton Hall, VCU, Western Kentucky and Saint Joseph’s.

Six of the next seven games will take place at Welsh-Ryan arena (and its new, more purple court) as the Wildcats host Stony Brook, Mississippi Valley State, Baylor, Texas Southern, Central Connecticut and Eastern Illinois.

Creighton on the road wraps things up.

For a team with a genuine shot at its first NCAA tournament berth, this is a lackluster non-conference schedule. Lots of opportunities for easy home wins, but easy home wins don’t count for much.

Hopefully  Northwestern gets a shot at Seton Hall and VCU at the Charleston Classic. Wins there combined with a win against Baylor will look good on a resume anyway, until conference play begins and things get tougher.
