Count or stop counting? Is this as good as it gets?

Count or stop counting? Is this as good as it gets?

This was an election like no other.  Not only did more people vote than at any time in our history, but one side doesn’t seem to understand that the results of the election determine who gets to live in the White House.

This is a confused and poorly informed group of malcontents.  The split screen image of them last week mimicked a case of split personality.

On one screen, Trumpsters in Arizona massed outside a ballot counting location chanting, Count those votes, which is halfway between inane and insane.

It was a ballot counting location.  That’s what they do in there.  It would have been no less ridiculous for them to be standing outside a McDonalds chanting, Fry those fries.

On the other screen, Trumpsters were standing outside a ballot counting location in Michigan chanting, Stop the count.

They just love their three-word chants, don’t they?  Send her back. Lock her up. Fill that seat.

Stop the count?  That falls somewhere between sedition and revolution.  It’s antithetical and anathema to democracy.  It’s un-American and it’s anti-American.

It’s Donald Trump’s complete lack of integrity that cast a shadow on the integrity of our elections.

Trump’s own appointee, Chris Krebs, director of the Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency assured Trump, America and the world that our 2020 election was the most secure in our nation’s history.

No additions, no subtractions, no interference.  No doubt, Krebs will lose his job over that.

Counting votes – all votes – is what democracy is about.  It is both defining in nature and essential for democracy to survive.

It could be said that a true democracy would require everyone to vote on everything, but that would be impractical.  In my family, we can’t even decide where to have dinner.

What we’re meant to have here in America is a democratic republic, where we elect officials to represent us.  Somehow, we have morphed into a Republican plutocracy, but that’s another story.

Among the things that comprise a working democracy are:
1) Elected representatives
2) Civil liberties
3) Independent judiciary
4) Organized opposition party
5) Rule of law

Thanks to Fox, Breitbart, Jones, Limbaugh and other assorted assholes, no one right of center believes that there should be an organized opposition party.  Those media outlets have portrayed anyone they can label as Democrat, Socialist, Progressive, Liberal, radical Left or even Communist as enemies of America.

To Trumpsters, you’re either one of them or you’re out to destroy America.  Fox’s 35-year campaign to demonize half the population has left its followers incapable of critical thought.

Trump doesn’t believe in the rule of law, an independent judiciary or civil liberties.  He has a cult-like grip on his followers and whips them into blind frenzies with daily lies and fabrications of non-existent conspiracies.

Trumpsters don’t think an opposition party should exist and don’t want their votes counted.  They do, however, want all of Trump’s votes counted, if not multiplied by 2 or 3.

In the movie, As Good As It Gets, Jack Nicholson, who plays a writer, is asked how he writes women so well. He replies, I think of a man and I take away reason and accountability.

Count, don’t count, lie, cheat, steal, don’t show us your taxes; it turns out that none of it matters.  That’s what happens when you take away reason and accountability.
