To lock him up or not to lock him up, that is the question for Joe and Mika

Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski are two of MSNBC’s Morning Joe co-hosts. They recently called out fans at Game 5 of the World Series as well as Twitterers (tweeters?) who lauded those fans.

When the visage of Donald Trump, watching the game from a luxury suite at Nationals Park in Washington, DC, appeared on the big screen, the park erupted in boos.  And it wasn’t even Halloween!

As the boos faded, they were replaced by chants of Lock him up, lock him up.  Maybe they thought it was a Trump rally and that’s what they were supposed to do.

Scarzinski (see what I did there, combined Scarborough and Brzezinski?) took umbrage at the display.  Mika politely opined, Joe and I agree with Michelle Obama when they go low, we must strive to go high.

Michelle Obama has no greater fan than me.  She is number one on a very short list of people with whom I would pay to have lunch.

From a political perspective though, she is wrong about the going high thing. Look where that got us.

It is not a workable model for Democrats to increasingly show up to gunfights with paper clips and child proof scissors.

President Obama went high throughout his presidency.  He showed remarkable aplomb against an onslaught of ignorance, prejudice and…..just plain ignorance.

Candidates however, do not have the same luxury of poise as do incumbents.  Especially not in the day of transmutable reality and alternative facts.

Joe was a bit more peevish:

So let’s see if I’ve got this straight: When crowds chant ‘Lock her up’ toward Hillary, it is illiberal and anti-American. (I agree),” he tweeted. “But when crowds chant the same toward Trump, it is suddenly a fulsome exercise of sacred First Amendment rights. What hypocritical clowns.

Hypocritical clowns?  Really?

Clearly Mika was more eloquent, Joe a tad over the top.  They might have reversed roles in the heat of Nationals fever.

Well, Joe and Mika,  What goes around comes around.

I confess that I never really knew what that meant, but it seems to fit.  Little Donnie led so many choruses of “Lock her up,” he most certainly had one coming his way.

There’s a larger issue and I can see Scarzinski’s point.  The least any of us can do is to look at clouds from both sides (Joni Mitchell) before calling for rain.

As Aaron Sorkin said through his fictional character President Andrew Shepard, You want free speech? Let’s see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who’s standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours.

But this was not that.

Little Donnie, master of demeaning nicknames criminalized “Crooked Hillary” without her ever being accused of a crime or any evidence of there being one.  It was no different than his “birther” campaign; character assassination by lies.

He reveled in his role as Pied Piper, misleading his minions to misconceptions and false beliefs, all fueled by their shared anger and sense of victimhood.

Donald Trump is a criminal, plain and simple.  The list of his misdeeds rivals any crime boss’s rap sheet.  His public criminal and anti-American behavior is just the tip of the iceberg.

As we learned from Titanic, it’s what’s below the surface that sinks ships.

Trump grabs pussies, shoots people on 5th Avenue, attacks American heroes, Gold Star families and our entire, non-partisan intelligence community, all while prostrating himself to Vladimir Putin and any other strongman whose poster he has on his bedroom wall.

The Mueller Report came and went, put asunder by a toady of an Attorney General.  Do ya think there’s some frustration out here, Joe?

If anyone deserved to be the object of a lock-him-up chant, it was Little Donnie Trump.

It was tame by send-them-back standards and a cheap way for 40,000 folks to blow off steam without trying to mount someone’s head on a pike.
