Conspiracy theories about the events of September 11, 2001 abound but, we all seem to agree that something horrible happened on that day.
There’s a generation of kids about to enter college who were not even alive in 2001 and it will be interesting to see, in years to come how they carry that event forward in history.
For us older Americans, images of planes crashing into buildings are lifelong memories.
9/11 is of such significance that only the date is all that is needed to refer to the first attack on American soil since Pearl Harbor. And when you read the words “Pearl Harbor” you knew exactly what attack that references, as well.
Paul Davis Ryan, Jr became a U.S. Representative from the 1st District of Wisconsin about 2-1/2 years before those planes took down the World Trade Center. His response was not legendary, but he later pressured the Obama administration to declassify 28 pages of the 2003 9/11 Report.
He seemed to want Americans to have access to all available facts.
When Ryan took over as Speaker of the House in 2015, he helped push through the 9/11 Bill, a measure that offers assistance to first responders suffering from the effects of working in the toxic environment that was the rubble of WTC.
It is disgraceful that it took 14 years for that bill to pass and it’s puny in its efficacy, but now we have it.
Addison Mitchell McConnell, Jr had been in the Senate for about 17 years on 9/11. His response to the attack is also less than legendary. He was one of the main roadblocks to the assistance package for first responders and it seemed, that it was pressure from comedian Jon Stewart that moved the Senate Leader to support the bill.
McConnell also opposed a law that would allow American families to sue Saudi Arabia for damages they sustained when their family members were murdered in an attack that is proven to have been largely funded by that Muslim state.
Neither Ryan nor McConnell will be mentioned in the next edition of Profiles in Courage, but neither of them acted in a way that suggests an impediment to the investigations into the attacks of 9/11.
They probably wouldn’t have tried to derail investigations into the attack at Pearl Harbor, either.
It’s worth noting here that President Harry S. Truman (dropped atomic bombs on Japan) didn’t shrug his shoulders and say, “Hey, that attack happened on Roosevelt’s watch, not mine.”
What is crystal clear, however is that Ryan and McConnell are entirely complicit in every attempt to impede the investigation into the painstakingly defined attack on American democracy by a known, hostile adversary (not a “competitor”).
Remarkably, we have to question if our lawmakers are working in the interest of the American people or Vladimir Putin. Are they “useful idiots” or agents of a foreign government?
Never before in the history of America have our senators and congressmen locked arms in unity to derail, impede and discredit an investigation into an attack on our country.
Never before has a president ignored an attack on America, much less sing the praises of the perpetrator of that attack as a “strong leader” and invite him into the Oval Office.
Several Republican congressman are currently trying to impeach Assistant Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who is overseeing the probe into Russia hacking into our “free” elections. The obvious intent is to find a replacement for Rosenstein, one who will put the kibosh on the probe.
There can be no explanation other than the obvious fact that these congressman are working for Vladimir Putin. We can all speculate as to why, but they are betraying their constituents and their country.
They are all Republicans (as if you couldn’t guess), here are the names of eight of them:
Mark Meadows (NC), Jim Jordan (OH), Andy Biggs (AZ), Scott Perry (PA), Paul A. Gosar, (Az), Jody Hice (GA),
Matt Gaetz (FL) and Scott DesJarlais (TN).
Now if this were China, home of one of Donald Trump’s favorite strong men, we could shoot these guys and make their families pay for the bullets.
Anyone else have a sudden urge for egg roll?
