Chick Corea & The Akoustic Band – featuring John Patitucci (bass) and Dave Weckl (drums) – performed two shows Thursday, August 23rd to sold out audiences in Corea’s first appearance at City Winery.
The evening consisted largely of the trio’s take on a slew of standards, including “Sophisticated Lady,” “Spain,” “How Deep is the Ocean” (Ellington), “Lover,” Arthur Schwartz’s Broadway composition “You and the Night and the Music,” plus a tribute to classical 17th-century composer Dom Scarlatti.
Corea’s accomplishments as a keyboardist, composer and bandleader have garnered him prestigious awards including enshrinement in the DownBeat Hall of Fame and the title of NEA Jazz Master. Corea also sits as the fourth-most nominated artist in Grammy Awards history with 63 nods, and 22 wins, in addition to a number of Latin Grammys.
