Although I was born and raised in Chicago and still reside here, I spent a couple of years away.
In Pinellas County.
The Tampa Bay Area.
I crossed the Sunshine Skyway Bridge on more than one occasion. It’s ginormous.
But beauty always has secrets.
Pasts. Ghosts. Skeletons.
The Sunshine Skyway has fallen victim to many suicide successes.
A father drives his 5 year old little girl to this glorious bridge, pulls her out of the car, stares down a police officer, and throws her off.
Off the bridge.
Phoebe Jonchuck, you deserved so much more. You deserved to have the sun on your face. To play in the sand. Collect shells. Go to school. Grow up. Go to college. Get Married. Have babies.
You deserved to drive over that bridge in your own car. Your hair blowing in the wind.
No matter how many times you cried as an infant you didn’t deserve this.
No matter how many times you argued over your outfit or shoes you didn’t deserve this.
No matter how many times you rejected your meal or argued with your siblings you didn’t deserve this.
No matter how many times you annoyed your parents in the past 5 years of your life, you didn’t deserve this.
Because there is nothing in this world that you could every do to deserve this.
Because he was your father.
He created you.
He gave you life.
He had no right to take it.
He was your father.
Phoebe Jonchuck, you deserved so much more.
And I’m sorry.
