In writing a memoir, it’s inevitable that you’ll come across a dilemma at some point. My dilemma right now concerns whether or not I should use my doctors’ real names and physical descriptions. Most of them have been amazing, but there were two (who, for the purposes of this blog, shall not be named!) that had a terrible bedside manner. For those of you who have written a medical memoir, did you use doctors’ names in your writing?
I obviously don’t want to get in any sort of ethical trouble or violate some sort of a confidentiality law, but at the same time I want to be truthful about my experiences, both good and bad. I’m concerned that if I change too much, it won’t be authentic and therefore won’t be MY experience because of that.
What would you do? How do you suggest keeping my experiences authentic while at the same time maintaining confidentiality and being ethical? Please let me know in the comments section!
