Pau Gasol is dominating the FIBA World Cup of Basketball

Pau Gasol was considered to be a consolation prize as the Bulls’ big free agent signing this past summer after Carmelo Anthony decided to stay in New York.

But if you’ve been paying attention to the FIBA World Cup of Basketball this week, you may just have found yourself saying “Carmelo who”?

While Team USA struggled to beat Turkey on Sunday, Pau Gasol has been leading Spain to three impressive wins, including Monday’s 82-63 blowout of a Brazilian team that features NBA players Nene, Tiago Splitter, Anderson Varejao, and Leandro Barbosa.

Pau Gasol Spain vs Brazil Highlights

Pau Gasol has been the most dominant player in the World Cup, leading the tournament in scoring with 23.7 points per game in only 25.7 minutes. He is also 5th in blocked shots (2.3 per game), 3rd in efficiency, 7th in field goal percentage (65.1%) and 18th in rebounding (6.5 per game).

FIBA World Cup of Basketball Statistical Leaders

Monday’s win over Brazil was certainly Pau Gasol’s most impressive game, as he had 26 points, 9 rebounds and three blocked shots in 29 minutes against Splitter, Nene and Varejao. He did all of that on 11/15 shooting, including three 3-pointers on four possessions in the third quarter.

Most Bulls fans have been following the World Cup to see how Derrick Rose looks as he recovers from his second knee injury, and you can’t blame them. But for some reason, most of what I read on the internet is fans whining and moaning about Pau Gasol being old and over the hill and a waste of free agent dollars.

If you are a Bulls fan and you haven’t been following Spain’s games in the World Cup, you need to start paying attention. Pau Gasol has been downright dominant, and he has been proving beyond any shadow of a doubt that he is still one of the most skilled big men in the world.

And if you’re wondering if he can still play defense, and you missed it in the other video, check out this “No soup for you!” blocked shot he had against Nene:

Don Ellis started covering sports professionally when he was 15. The same year (1980), as a student assistant at Seeger Memorial High School in West Lebanon, IN, he was one of the first in the world to use, study and implement analytics in basketball. He attended Daytona State College and Ball State University, and some of his past credits include InsideHoops (NBA Runaround: The NBA According to Ellis) and ESPN Florida (The Florida Sports Reporters), where he was fortunate enough to work with many rising stars, including NFL Network's Dan Hellie, Redskins coach Jay Gruden, Magic radio and TV personality Dante Marchitelli, and WSB-TV (Atlanta) Sports Director Zach Klein. In addition to running the Bullsville blog and officiating basketball, baseball and football for the KHSAA, he is also a bass player and vocalist who writes and produces music in his spare time (you may remember his internet hit "I Hate Eddy Curry"). He's a 3rd-generation Cubs fan, a Bulls fan since the days of Van Lier and Sloan, and a life-long New England Patriots fan. He's seen Primus 9 times and thinks Les Claypool walks on water. By far his greatest accomplishment is being a father of three and grandfather of one.
