Ben & Jerry’s has delicious ice cream. I really like ice cream, but due to my whey protein intolerance, I’ve stayed away from it for years.
On the rare occasion I chose to eat it, I paid a torturous gastric price.
After a few too many embarrassing toots, and a few too many mad dashes for the nearest toilet, I finally crossed it off my edible treats list.
Yesterday, I bought a little slice of heaven in a short, cylindrical cardboard container.
One cool, creamy spoonful and I knew that Ben & Jerry’s had done it; they found a way to make a non-dairy ice cream the whey protein and lactose intolerant of the world can truly embrace.
The only flavor I could find (at Target, of all places) was the PB & Cookies. It’s almond milk ice cream, swirled with peanut butter and packed with chocolate and vanilla sandwich cookies.
It has the same creamy texture as regular ice cream, and it tastes nearly identical to dairy ice cream.
The swirled-in extras turn the ice cream into the delectable treat it is. All the crunchy, sweet and salty flavors from the PB and cookies blend into blissfully satisfying mouthful.
I did take a spoonful of just the ice cream without the goodies blended in. The almond milk ice cream is a bit blander than dairy ice cream, but it’s still tasty.
In my humble opinion, the non-dairy ice cream will need the bold swirled-in flavors to make the experience truly taste-bud worthy, but I’m OK with that.
I’ve always liked my ice cream to crunch.
I hear there are three more flavors – Chocolate Fudge Brownie (oh, someone please find this one for me), Chunky Monkey and Coffee Caramel Crunch.
They’ve only created four flavors, but that’s four more flavors of ice cream than I had before!
Click this link if you want to learn more about the non-dairy ice cream, and here is a short video:
This is not an allergy friendly food, though. It’s loaded with peanut oil, almond milk and this flavor has crunchy peanut butter.
Sorry allergy folks – maybe Ben & Jerry’s will find a great solution for you, too!
