The long-awaited musical SUMMER the Donna Summer Musical has arrived in Chicago at the James M. Nederlander Theatre.

I was present in the dance clubs sweating heavily to the sounds of Donna Summer.  I remember when I first heard ‘Love to Love You Baby’ at a club.  Things heated up quickly on the dance floor.  There were a lot of rumors regarding the life of this Disco Queen, this production takes us through the life of the child, the young lady, the woman named Donna Adrian Gaines.

Three actresses portray Donna Summers and all three have powerful voices.  Duckling Donna is played by Olivia Elease Hardy.  06ygumrw Olivia’s voice is strong, clear, and beautiful.  She takes us through Donna’s life as a sister, daughter, church choir singer, and sadly, an abused child.

7zob4ypw We experience the career of Disco Donna through the voice of Alex Hairston.  She belts all our favorite Donna Summer songs and we experience her life from Germany to the production of HAIR, her marriages, the birth of her children, and the ups and downs of her career.

Diva Donna, the mature Donna, is played by Dan’yelle Williamson.  She is the thread that weaves the life and times of Donna Summer together.  Her voice is powerful and soulful. t-kfv2oa

SUMMER The Donna Summer Musical is an entertaining evening of theatre with great dancing, costumes, and music. All my favorites were sung, On the Radio; Dim All the Lights, Hot Stuff, and Last Dance. However, I did feel that something was missing.  The voices were on point, the story was told in a way that you got the idea of all that happened in her life but, and I know this sounds strange, I didn’t feel full at the end of the show.  It was not for the lack of talent on the stage.

With that said, I do recommend the show.  It is only in Chicago until February 23rd.

I give it 4 out of 5 winks of the EYE.

Until next time, keep your EYE to the sky!
