Celebrate Women and Children First's 30th birthday

This weekend, Andersonville's Women and Children First Bookstore is celebrating their 30th anniversary in a big way. On Saturday, lesbian writers Dorothy Allison (Bastard Out of Carolina, Trash) and Alison Bechdel (Dykes to Watch Out For, Fun Home) will be on hand to party in the name of women's lit.

Owners Ann Christophersen and Linda Bubon talked with Chicago Public Radio's Eight Forty-Eight today about the history of the store, their intentions for the future and what has changed over three decades, including LGBTQ sections at bookstores.

The party itself is happening at Breakers on Edgewater Beach (5333 N. Sheridan Rd.), beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 3. Besides featuring the two powerhouse gay authors, there will be cocktails, a buffet and dancing. As it is also a benefit for the store, tickets are $60 - $100, but limited income tickets are available.

If you can't make it that early on, check out the afterparty at Big Chicks (5024 N. Sheridan Rd.), beginning at 10 p.m.
