I'm Spiritual, Dammit

Kids see things we don't

The other night I was tucking my son into bed.

"Look, Mom!"  He said.

"What?"  I asked.

"The Angel," he said, pointing to the sky.

I've written about how my son can see his dead grandfather.  While my Dad died years before Britt was a twinkle in my eye, he's been talking to him since he was two years old.  I've received dozens of emails from parents with similar stories.  So this didn't really surprise me.

'How many Angels are there?"  I asked.

He looked up and started counting.

"One, two, three, four, five..." he said as he pointed in a different direction with each number. "Five."

"What color are they?"  I asked.

"Pink."  (loooong pause.)  "And purple."

"What do they look like," I asked.

"The clouds," he said.  "Don't you see them?"

"No, honey.  Lots of grown ups can't see the Angels," I explained.

Britt took his fingers out of his mouth and turned to me, surprised.

"Why not?!"

Good question.

I tickled his back for a few minutes as he settled down.

"Are the Angels still here?" I whispered, wondering what colors he was seeing now.

"They landed," he said- in a very matter-of-fact tone.

"Where did they land?"  I wondered.  I mean, I didn't want to step on them as I left his room.  That would be disastrous.

Britt turned to me and looked me in the eyes.

"No more Angel talk Mom.  I'm tired."

Got it.

I've had several conversations with adults who grew up seeing and hearing things that many of us don't.  But because they were told it was "in their heads" or "imaginary friends"- they never developed this sixth sense.

If you have a child exploring these ideas and using what you might consider to be too much of their imagination- do them a favor and nurture it.  If you shut them down because you don't understand or you think it's different, you rob them of their gifts.

Maybe- just maybe- they are here to teach you something.

I am reading an interesting book: "Visions,Trips and Crowded Rooms",
by David Kessler. It is about what and who we see before you die.
He researched people's experiences as they are dying. Very good evidence we see others' who have passed before us.
I work for hospice, and I know what David Kessler is talking about!
